Catherine "Cathy" Hammond Andary died peacefully at St. John Hospital in Detroit, Michigan on January 21, 2015 at the age of 79, after a long battle with Alzheimer's disease. Cathy is survived by her foolishly devoted husband Dr. Lee Andary of Grosse Pointe Farms, MI; her children; Michael Thomas Andary, M.D. (Ellen) of East Lansing, MI, Susan Andary Wells (John) of Farmington Hills, MI, Diane Andary Coon (Brad) of Three Rivers, MI and John Leesha Andary, M.D. (Kathy) of Idaho Falls, ID; her fourteen grandchildren; Catherine, Caroline, David, William, Caitlin, James, Johnny, Michelle, Robert, Thomas, Steven, Nicholas, Claire, and Jack; and her siblings James Hammond (Mary), and Cindy Phillips (Thomas). She was preceded in death by her parents Harold and Mary Hammond, and her brother David Hammond. Cathy was born on March 11, 1935 and raised in Royal Oak, MI. She graduated with honors from Shrine of the Little Flower High School in 1953 and attended University of Detroit Dental School, graduating with an Associate Degree in Dental Hygiene in 1955. During freshmen year of college, she met her devoted Lee, and after a courtship married him in 1956. This started a lifelong love affair. Ten months later, they had their first child, Mike, in Columbia, SC while Lee was a captain in the Army. In 1958 they moved to Roseville, MI where they had their next two children, Sue and Diane. In 1967 they moved to Grosse Pointe Woods where their youngest son, John was born. In 1990, they moved to Grosse Pointe Farms, their present home. Cathy volunteered for multiple organizations including The Fontebonne Auxiliary of St. John Hospital, Bon Secours Nursing Home, was a lifetime Member of the St. Paul Altar Society, St Jude Children's Research Hospital and multiple other causes over her lifetime. She was an active and dedicated member of the Catholic Church and made sure her children attended mass regularly. Her giving personality was realized most by her family and friends. Everybody loved Cathy. She exercised regularly doing aerobics before it was fashionable. She enjoyed tennis, golf (she had a hole in one), swimming (in cold water), skiing, horseback riding, and jogging. She also had a penchant for trying numerous crafts including decoupage, sewing, knitting, and cooking. Cathy excelled at hosting family events and holidays, allowing all to have fun. Finally, Cathy was a celebrated shopper, her children and grandchildren being the greatest beneficiaries. Together Cathy and Lee traveled the world in style, from Australia to Scandinavia, from St. Petersburg to Egypt, and from Ireland to Lebanon. They enjoyed skiing and golfing in Northern Michigan and together were world class beach bums on Long Boat Key, Florida. Cathy's dedication to family was her defining passion. Her remarkable mothering and nurturing is the foundation for her children's happy marriages and families. Printed words cannot capture the depth of her positive influence on their lives.
