Chris was born in Scranton, Pennsylvania, the son of the late James and Myrtie (Odgers) Manning. He was a 1975 graduate of Grand Ledge High School. He attended Lansing Community College, Michigan State University, and the Worsham College of Mortuary Science. Chris worked as a funeral director for several years, but his passion for building led him to a career in construction contracting, where he was currently working. He eventually built his own funeral home and operated as a silent partner.
Chris's greatest pride was his children and their accomplishments. In recent years, he became a fixture at his grandchildren's events, cheering them on with enthusiasm. He was also devoted to his beloved pets, Cozette and Winston.
He is survived by his wife of 44 years, Teresa (Loeb) Manning; his daughter, Elizabeth, and grandchildren, Michael and Claire, of Grosse Pointe Shores; and his son, Michael, and granddaughter, Sophie, of Pennsylvania. He is also survived by his brothers, Mark (Nancy) Manning of Mason and Neil Manning of Brighton; his in-laws, Lisa (Pat) Malloy of Grand Ledge, Deanna (Tim) Schuchaskie of Lansing, Patrick (Amanda) Loeb of Grand Rapids, and Raija Manning of St. Johns; many nieces and nephews; his Grosse Pointe family, Kathy, Michael, and Laura Jensen; and his foreign exchange family, Jacopo and Saverio Ferrante of Italy, Vincent Wilczek and Lukas Schimmelpfeng of Germany, Lisa Yan of Denmark, and Eduardo Liberal of Spain.
Chris was preceded in death by his parents; his son-in-law, David Jensen; his sister, Marie Slusser; his brother, Larry Manning, just two weeks prior; his parents-in-law, Sam and Barbara Loeb; and his in-laws, Michael and Pamela Loeb.
Visitation will take place on Saturday, February 15, 2025, from 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM, with a 4:00 PM prayer service at A.H. Peters Funeral Home in Grosse Pointe Woods, MI. A formal funeral and burial will be held in St. Johns in the summer. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Henry Ford Sandcastles (Grief Support Program for Children and Families) or the charity of your choice.
