An old family friend told me about Gus. I'm sure you know who I am...Linda Woodrow. My dad, Ron Woodrow was the wholesale grocer that supplied the candy for Fairfax for many years. I would sometimes help my dad deliver to fairfax on our way home at night. I remember the huge smile on Gus's face everytime he saw me. He was the nicest individual that I can remember growing up as a child. Even though the little red swedish fish were from my dads wholesale, I still wanted to get them from Gus. He taught me how to count and purchase with my pennies. God bless his kind soul. He will always be a memory from my childhood.

As second cousin to Costas I really enjoyed being around him whenever our families got together. When I would come back to Detroit see my parents I would always visit with him at the store. My father would tell me of the hunting trips they would go on and the Thursday evenings at the Cyprus Coffee Shop in Greek Town where all of our relatives played Tavlie (Backgammon). Gus and his family were a very welcoming part of Grosse Pointe Park when we first moved there. My children haven very warm memories of shopping at the store after school at Trombly and there was always a smile and kind words when I dashed in after work to find something to cook. Our sincerest condolences from the Rodriguez/Reeves family.

Sorry for your loss, Prayers. My grandmother, mother and I have done our shopping at Fairfax Market, it was a good market. Even though you and Gus are far apart, Gus will remain close in heart and thought.

I know my family will never forget Gus. My kids probably went to the Fairfax store every day for treats and Gus, Rita, Dora and Harry's cheerful kindness. As my kids grew up and had their various activities they would always ask about their achievements. I know Gus will make and have lots of friends in heaven! With Sympathy the Martinez Family.

Gus made sure my sister and I had meals to eat when we lived in the neighborhood. He would let us sign the back of the receipt, and when my dad eventually had money, he would pay Gus back.   We have never forgotten his kindness. Thank you Gus. May your memory be a blessing.

An incredible individual, one that breaks the mold. Gus and Rita always made you feel as if you were part of their family when entering their market.  My girls (Daphne & Lillian) used to love to go for a visit. You will be missed and God Bless.

All I can do is smile when I think of Gus! He treated me and all the kids like we were his own! He was so good to me and my family. He knew my favorite candy of choice. Red fish! And always had a little brown bag for me whenever I care in no matter how old I got!!!

Swedish fish! Gus had an AMAZING memory. Running from Trombly to Fairfax during lunchtime as a child? He and his whole family made me feel welcome. Even several decades later, I'd go home to visit mom and he'd recognize me and STILL give me fish! Subs in the deli? I'll miss him. One of the kindest men I've ever known. RIP and my condolences to the entire family for a LIFETIME of kindness.

I will never forget the kindness of Mr. Gus and his family. I have many memories of going to Fairfax market and being greeted by Mr. Gus. He was so patient when I picked out my penny candy, and often dropped in a few extra candies! Praying for the family during this difficult time.

I spent my entire childhood 1 block away from Fairfax Market. I loved that Gus used to greet us with a smile and always treated us kids with respect. He even remembered who I was 10 yrs ago when I stopped in to visit (after 25 yrs of being gone). Such a kind wonderful man this world will miss. I have so many childhood memories that revolve around the market with Gus and Rita. It was a good day when you had to go pick something up and could get a little candy! I’m so thankful I was able to introduce my own kids to Gus and Rita. He will be truly missed, my thoughts and love are with the family

Fairfax market was part of my childhood I will never forget. I remember driving my bike there with my sister and picking up Penny candy. It was truly a neighborhood market and your father and family always made everybody feel so welcome. My condolences to his family, he was a wonderful man and will be missed.

One never realizes the influence they can have on others. My Godfather was a great mentor and I learned a great deal from him working at Fairfax when I was a teenager. But the most important lesson was watching him interact with people. His love for people was truly a gift.

Remembering Gus tonight. Trips to Fairfax Market were an important part of my childhood. Gus, and his family, were what made it such a special place. Always had free candy for the kids, and knew what was going on with all his regular customers. He was one of the kindest people I was ever lucky enough to meet.

What an absolutely wonderful man Gus was...He will be so missed by a whole community! My prayers and condolences to his family. My kids adored him.

Gus always greeted me with hello Miss Ellison and made me feel like part of the Fairfax family. Loved going into Fairfax to shop and talk to he and Rita, Dora and Harry. My brother took Greek lessons so he could communicate with his Greek in-laws and when in Detroit would talk to Gus and family in Greek. He got a kick out of that. Loved to see the way he handled the kids and their candy. He will be missed. Prayers for a wonderful, giving man.

I absolutely loved visiting the Fairfax market.  Gus and Dora. From the extremely warm hello w the beautiful far away accent to the creeks of the old wooden floors. My youngest memories are fishes from the front and paper wrapped bones from the back. Gus and his family brought so much to that little corner in the world. Thank you for that and so much more.

Gus and Rita were such a wonderful influence in the GPP community. Gus was like a grandfather to our daughter. We love him and will be forever grateful for his kindness and generosity.

Growing up on Middlesex, echoing what so many have already written here, Gus was absolutely legendary. The kindest soul, who seemed to know everyone, and remember the last conversation he had with you and would pick it up again where you left off. He gave my Brother and I our first job growing up. The amount of Swedish Fish and watermelon Sour Patch Kids I purchased from him cannot be known, I know I'm not alone in that! He shaped my and other young people's lives in the community in the best and most unforgettable ways, just by being there. I am sorry I can't be there this weekend to hug Rita, Dora, Harry, Nick, etc. in person. Sending so much love and thoughts from Colorado to friends and family this weekend as he is remembered.

Thank you Gus for all the kindnesses you bestowed on me, my children Alicia and Ana through all the years You kept us all! And for friend Beth Ryon. You allowed her to stay in her home for many years. And also, thank you for the heartffelt gift of staying with the store well beyond your iintended departure, so that the neighborhood would be able to have a family store instead of a parking lot.   Thank you, Rita for all the above I am so sorry for you that he's gone.

So many memories, Theo Costa. I will never forget how attentive you were to details and how you remembered everything about me and asked questions to learn updates. Not many relatives were that tuned in and attentive and made me feel important like that. Your kindness, your brilliant business mind and conversational skills will always be remembered.Thank you for fond memories and generosities, seen and unseen. And thanks for your patience with me when I was a little smart aleck! O dear me, how I must have drove you crazy with my sass! Your legacy lives on in your sons.

i will always remember uncle Kostas, what i kind and wonderful man he was. We always had such a good time when he came to see us during his visits in Cyprus to see his beloved cousin, my father Kostakis with whom they shared so many happy childhood memories.
