Dan was born on May 30,1946, on the east side of Detroit and attended St. Philip Neri School, where he made many of his lifelong friends. On a cold February morning, while walking to mass, he met the love of his life, Sandy. Initially, he’d thought about skipping, but instead followed her into church, which became a cornerstone of their marriage. Over the years, they grew from two spaces in the pew at St. Philip’s to regularly squeezing 30+ people into the last few rows at St. Joan of Arc while attending mass as a family.
Their 60-year marriage was built on the strongest faith and unconditional love. They enjoyed traveling the world, but were just as happy to pack up some PBJs for a picnic on a Sunday afternoon. They shared many laughs playing pickle ball, taking walks on the beach and completing DIY projects. Together, they built their greatest legacy: Jeff (Delia), Danny (Alissa), Shannan McCarron (Kevin), Jennifer Buszka (John), Michelle Totin (Michael), and Margaret Case (Brad).
Always room for one more at their table, they welcomed into their home their 19 grandchildren who were their pride and joy: Alessandro (Lydia), Justin (Maikala), Mara, Connor, Brennen, Colin, Brady, Marco, Kevin, Kaleigh, Daniel (Ava), Ryan, Annie, Jack, Emma, Ellie, Alyson, Liam, Michael and coming soon, a great-grandson this August.
Dan worked in sales, where his enthusiasm, honesty, and authenticity earned him respect in his field. In retirement, he kept his sales skills alive while working alongside his family at Eastside Bagel. Dan was also very creative with a passion for photography. He loved taking photos of his family and the sunset, but Sandy was always his favorite subject.
He enjoyed countless hours on the sidelines cheering on his children and grandchildren, oftentimes hitting three or four games in a day. Everyone’s biggest cheerleader, he was always the loudest and proudest voice in the bleachers. The outcome didn’t matter, he was first in line for a post-game hug and always suggested a celebratory ice cream. When he wasn’t at games, there was nothing he loved more than hosting epic-themed parties at his cottage in Port Austin, attending Motown reviews with his music-loving friends, being on the golf course with the gentlemen of the Blue Jacket Open, and especially a little Captain’s, a cigar, and storytelling around a campfire that he had meticulously built.
Dan’s big heart led him to be a servant for God. He was a member of the Men of the Sacred Hearts, bringing the miracle of the rosary into others' homes, volunteered with his wife as a sponsor couple preparing the newly-engaged for the sacrament of matrimony, shared his positivity and faith with patients at Beaumont through the Spiritual Care Program, directed St. Joan’s Easter Experience, and led a team of volunteers to stock St. Joan of Arc’s food pantry every Christmas. An excellent role-model, he showed up to help others.
Whether he was delivering your Eastside bagel order with an extra ingredient of love, or creating sales presentations that inspired his coworkers, he built a legacy of faith and love as a husband, father, papa and friend and made everyone he met feel like they were a part of his family. Known to many as “Dan The Man,” he taught us all that love isn’t just spoken, it is demonstrated and his legacy will live on forever.
