Delmar James Harkenrider, age 87, passed away peacefully on July 26, 2026. Delmar was born on February 6, 1939, in New Haven, Indiana. Delmar lived a life defined by deep devotion to his faith, his community, and above all, his family.
Delmar was the beloved husband of Marie (deceased), with whom he shared 58 wonderful years of marriage. Together, Delmar and Marie raised five devoted children: James, Tim (Sally), Andrew (Carmen), Stacey Townson (Keith), and Glenn (Patricia).
Delmar found his greatest joy in raising his kids. Some of the family's fondest memories are of the many camping trips they took together.
Delmar is survived by his brothers and sisters, Gerald (Myrna), Joan (David) Wolff, Joyce Martin, Robert (Nancy) and Janice (Jeff) Krusen.
Delmar’s legacy extends proudly to his eight grandchildren: Allison, Grace, Luke, Nicholas, Ethan, Maxwell, Brendan, and Gia, who will forever cherish the warmth, wisdom, and gentle guidance of their grandpa.
Professionally, Delmar dedicated his 45-year career to shaping young minds as a school teacher in Detroit. He approached education with patience and care, leaving a lasting impact on generations of students.
Outside of work and family, Delmar was a man of strong community involvement with the Grosse Pointe Historical Commission, ushering at St. Joan of Arc church and the YMCA. Delmar’s hobbies included bridge, long bicycle rides, traveling, and bowling. Spending many joyful years on the lanes with friends and league members. He was also a proud, dedicated member of the Knights of Columbus for over 50 years, living out the organization's principles of charity, unity, and fraternity throughout his life.
Delmar’s kindness, steady presence, and generous heart will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
Visitation Thursday from 2:00 pm until 9:00 pm. He will lie instate on Friday from 9:30 am until the time of the Mass of the Resurrection at 10:00 am at St Joan of Arc Church in St Clair Shores.
