

Monroe S. Lechner M.D., 89, passed away peacefully after a prolonged illness. Dr. Lechner is a former resident of Grosse Pointe Park, St.Clair, MI and Venice, FL. Dr. Lechner is survived by his wife and the love of his life of 58 years, Helen; children, Gary (Maureen), Jon, Jane, Carole McDonald (Michael), Paul (Rhonda); ten grandchildren; brother, Jerome (Florence). He was predeceased by his son, Brother-Deacon Joel Lechner, OSM. He was a loving and wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and friend. Born in New York City, NY to Arthur and Marie Lechner, Dr. Lechner served in WWII as a weatherman in the U.S. Army Air Corp. After service he attended the University of Maryland and then transferred to Wayne University. He was a 1953 graduate of the Wayne University School of Medicine. A private practice physician until the mid-1960s, he then transitioned to the practice of occupational medicine for the Chrysler Corporation and then the Ford Motor Company until his retirement in 1987. Throughout his life he had many and varied interests. He was committed to service; to his country, community, church, family, and friends. He touched the lives of many, sharing his time and talents without reservation or expectation. Until illness prevented him from participating, he was active in the Wayne County Medical Society, Michigan Occupational Health Association, Grosse Pointe Senior Men's Club and Kiwanis International. He enjoyed travel, literature, theatre, wood working, model building, and spending time with family and friends. He was the honorary summer camp director at Camp Oompee where he and Gram spent time with their grandchildren at their home in St. Clair, MI. Visitation at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236 on Tuesday, October 29, from 2:00 pm 9:00 pm PM. Funeral Mass at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack, Saint Clair Shores, MI 48080 in state; Wednesday October 30, 9:30 am until time of mass 10:00 am.
