With heavy hearts, the family of Edward Fencyk, age 78, of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, announces his passing on October 20, 2026.
A devoted son, brother, husband, father, and grandfather, Ed lived a life grounded in faith, family, education, and concern for others. Throughout his life, he demonstrated a deep commitment to helping others grow, offering guidance, encouragement, and compassion to those fortunate enough to know him.
Born on February 23, 1948, in Detroit, Michigan, to Edward Sr. and Helen, Ed developed a strong foundation of faith and family that would guide him throughout his life.
Education was more than a profession for Ed; it was a calling. As a middle school teacher and counselor, he dedicated his 35 year career to educating and supporting young people during some of their most formative years. His influence reached well beyond the classroom, leaving a lasting impact on generations of young people and the families he served.
His dedication to guiding others was deeply rooted in his Catholic faith. A devoted member of St. Isaac Jogues Catholic Church, Ed generously shared his time with his parish community, through his service on the Parish Council and his commitment to teaching religious education.
Ed had a deep love for the outdoors, especially hunting and fishing. More than the activities themselves, he cherished the lifelong friendships, traditions, and lasting memories built through time spent with friends in the woods and on the water.
Above all, Ed's greatest blessing was his family. He was the beloved husband of Geraldine, his loving wife of 53 years; the devoted father of John (Amy) Fencyk and Maureen (Nathan) Lavalle; and the proud grandfather of Katherine, Molly, Jack, and Sloane. Ed is also survived by his sisters, Barbara Lex and Rose (Mark) Andrecovich, and many cherished nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward Sr. and Helen, his brothers Thomas, Gerald and Ronald and his in-laws, Rita and Paul Conroy, Francis Conroy, Dennis Lex and Marsha Fencyk.
As a devoted father and proud grandfather, Ed treasured sharing his wisdom, faith, and love with his family. He believed deeply in the importance of family and led by example, demonstrating kindness, integrity, perseverance, and compassion through his everyday actions. His guidance will remain an enduring gift to his children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
Whether in the classroom, the counselor's office, in the woods, or his own home, he was a teacher at heart—sharing not only knowledge and wisdom, but also the values of faith and compassion that defined his life. Ed demonstrated a genuine appreciation for the people and experiences that mattered most, and his legacy will live on through the family he loved, the friendships he cherished, the students he inspired, and the countless lives he touched.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate Edward's life at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan 48236 on Monday, October 26, 2026, from 2:00pm to 8:00pm .
Visitation will also be held at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack Ave, St. Clair Shores, Michigan on October 27, 2026, from 11:30am to 12:00pm, followed by the Funeral Service at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church on October 27, 2026 at 12:00pm. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Capuchin Soup Kitchen (www.cskdetroit.org) or the Immaculate Heart of Mary Sisters (www.ihmsisters.org), honoring his lifelong commitment to their mission.
