Elsie Verlinden

Elsie Verlinden, age 90, died peacefully in her sleep after a short battle with ALS on May 7, 2018 . Elsie was born on August 24, 1927 in Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada. When she was four years old her parents returned to their homeland in Belgium. She was raised and educated there and witnessed World War II. When she was 20, her family immigrated to Detroit. Elsie worked for several years at Wrigleys, a Detroit based grocery store chain. In 1951 Elsie married Jack Verlinden at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Detroit. The young couple settled in St. Clair Shores in 1956 where they raised their two daughters. Elsie was an outgoing person who made friends easily. She had many enduring friendships that lasted a lifetime. She was a mother and homemaker most of her life but also helped Jack in his business, The Continental Art Gallery, that was located on Mack just north of Cadieux Road. Elsie was very proud of her Belgian heritage. She was a volunteer at the Belgian Gazette and was a member of the Belgian Century Club. She was also a member of the YMCA. She was an adoring grandmother and enjoyed reading. She was a beautiful, classy lady who was always "put together". She is survived by her daughters, Linda Forrester (Oz) and Jacqueline Quain (James); her two grandchildren: Alexa and Jack; and her sister, Al Mauger. Also survived by several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband Jack in 2005. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. A scripture service will begin at 7:00 p.m. Her body will lie instate at St. Joan of Arc Church, 21620 Mack at Overlake, St. Clair Shores from 10:30 a.m. Thursday until mass begins at 11:00 a.m. The family has suggested memorials be made to ALS of Michigan (Lou Gehrigs Disease), 24359 Northwestern Hwy., Suite 100; Southfield, MI 48075 .
