

Eugene Francis Guswiler, affectionately known as Gene, was born in Detroit, Michigan, on September 16, 1932, and passed away peacefully on June 19 at St. John’s Hospital in Detroit, Michigan. He was the beloved son of Eugene Sr. and Kathleen Guswiler, and brother to Thomas Guswiler, Annette Guswiler, and Louis Guswiler, and previous marriage to Mary Donahue Guswiler, all of whom preceded him in death. Gene was also the devoted husband of Sharon Wright Guswiler, with whom he shared more than 40 years of marriage before her passing. He was the loving father of nine sons: Timothy, Brian (Connie), Paul (Deborah), John (Kelly), Robert, Michael (Julie), Matthew (Giovanna), Timothy VanEckoute (Susie), and Mark VanEckoute (Jimmy), along with 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren. Gene attended De La Salle High School and the University of Detroit. He dedicated nearly 30 years of his career to education, serving as Dean of Students at Macomb County College in Macomb County, Michigan. In retirement, Gene and Sharon enjoyed traveling extensively throughout the United States and taking cruises together. They made cherished homes in St. Clair Shores and Grosse Pointe, Michigan, and spent winters in Nokomis, Florida. Gene will be remembered as gregarious, fun-loving, and warmly regarded by all who knew him.
A service at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, and a celebration of life will be held later this year.
