Evette Aubrey, age 92, passed away on September 11, 2023. Beloved wife to the late Shaker. Loving mother of George, Michael (Lorraine), Adele, Joseph (MaryTherese), Theresa Kozak and Marie Zelenak. Cherished “Sitto” to 17 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Survived by her brother Nicholas, sister Souad, brother Louis and sister Violet in Lebanon.
Evette Aubrey was an incredible woman, mother, wife, sister, “Sitto”, and great-grandmother who will be missed and cannot be replaced. Evette was an immigrant from Zahle, Lebanon who left her family and came to Detroit at the age of 19. She overcame all odds after she tragically lost her husband of 17 years at the age of 35 and raised six children on her own. She worked multiple jobs, served tables, peeled potatoes, learned English on her own, and became an interpreter for the federal government to support her family. Through everything, Evette always stayed positive, worked incredibly hard, and was adored by everyone she met. She was an active member at Our Lady of Redemption Church and will be remembered for her strong and beautiful voice in the church choir. She had an unwavering love for God and never missed her yearly visits to Our Lady of Consolation in Carey, Ohio.
Many in Detroit knew her as “Mama”. She was a mother to all - feeding strangers, police officers, and had a strong heart and passion for helping and feeding the homeless. Her trunk was always full of her famous Lebanese food, ready to feed anyone in need. Evette loved Bingo, and took her daily “walks” at the casino to play lucky 7’s. She had an incredible life, but never missed an opportunity to brag to friends and strangers about her 6 children, 17 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.
Visitation for Evette will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2023 from 3 PM to 8 PM, with a Trisagion at 7 PM, at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236. A funeral service will be on Friday, September 15th, 2023 at 11 AM, instate at 10 AM, at Our Lady of Redemption Melkite Catholic Church, 29293 Lorraine Ave, Warren, MI 48093. Evette will be laid to rest at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit, MI immediately following the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Evette’s honor would be appreciated to Our Lady of Redemption Melkite Catholic Church.
