

F. Phil Saverino, 100, of Grosse Pointe Woods, passed away peacefully on May 9, 2016. He was born on June 12, 1915 in Detroit, Michigan the eldest of seven children born to the late Santo Saverino and Stefana Saverino (nee Delisi). He was recently proceeded in death by his wife of nearly seventy years, Aline R. Saverino (Furanna) on April 23, 2016. Phil is survived by his children; Victor Saverino (Fran Hemmen), Frank Saverino (Donna James), and his daughter Aline Saverino (John Lafferty). Phil had eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. Growing up during the depression, Phil worked several jobs and found his niche in the food industry. In 1942, Phil purchased a butcher shop from his mentor and renamed it Phil's Quality Market. Phil was called away to serve during World War II in the United States Marine Corp, where he served in the South Pacific theater which included the island of Guam and Mainland China. While in California for basic training, Phil met the love of his life, Aline at a USO dance. Phil and Aline built a nearly seventy-year marriage together all beginning with their written letters to each other during those war years. Phil brought his bride back to Michigan and over the following four decades their neighborhood grocery store thrived as the business expanded to include Phil's home catering menus and specialty dishes. An active member of the community, Phil belonged to several business and philanthropic clubs including: The Associated Food Dealer's Association, the Grosse Pointe Crisis Club, Knights of Columbus Council #7780, American Legion Post #510, and the East Warren Business Men's Association. A member of the Lions Club for more than 60 years he served in many leadership positions including that of District Governor and was named Michigan Lion of the Year in 1989. During the 1990's Phil also served on the Board of Trustees for Leader Dogs for the Blind. Visitation will be on Thursday, May 12, 2016 from 2:00 to 8:00 pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods with a scripture service at 7:00 pm Thursday evening. On Friday, May 13, 2016 he will lie in state at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church; 467 Fairford Road at Morningside, Grosse Pointe Woods beginning at noon until the funeral mass at 12:30 pm. Entombment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township. In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make donations to the Leader Dogs for the Blind, 1039 S.
