Fay Marie (Martinez) Latimer, 77, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan, passed away on March 4, 2025. With her two daughters holding each hand, she was surrounded with love. Fay was born on May 1, 1947, in Embudo, New Mexico, to Mary Lou Maestas and Severino Martinez.
Fay graduated high school in 1965 in Española, New Mexico. She retired from the West Bloomfield School District as a baker where she was known for her amazing cookies and cinnamon rolls.
Fay married John Stewart Latimer II in Detroit, Michigan on June 16, 1967. They were married for 42 years until John’s passing in 2009. Their children include John Latimer III, Cynthia Latimer (Michael Brooks), and Lisa Stone (Doug).
Fay was known for her excellent cooking and baking and you could not visit without leaving with some of her baked goods, especially her homemade biscotti. She loved spending time in her yard, tending to flowers and her garden and sitting on her deck to admire her hard work. She could be seen in the bleachers of Avery’s hockey games, cheering for his team. At her side during her activities was her loyal dog, Zoey. She talked to her kids and grandchildren regularly and loved visiting with her family and friends as much as she could.
A loving mother to her children, her greatest role in life was that of grandmother, or “Baba” to her grandchildren. She will be sorely missed by her grandchildren John R Latimer, Nicole Latimer, Gabrielle Stone, Peyton Stone and Avery Brooks, with whom she shared many adventures and endless laughs. Fay was preceded in death by her parents, Severino and Mary Lou, husband John, brother Ronnie and niece Tanya. In addition to her children, she is survived by her sister Nashie Prouty “Woody”, who was both a sister to her as well as her friend, 9 grandchildren, 1 great-granddaughter, sister-in-laws Jill and Judy Latimer, her nephew Martine, great-niece Adelina, daughter-in-law Rosi Mendoza and many cousins, friends and neighbors.
Fay loved life and lived it exactly how she wanted; surrounded always by family, laughing and having fun. She fought hard through her illness to stay with her family for as long as she could.
In one of Fay’s journals, familiar words were found on a note that serve as a reminder during this time.
The note reads:
Treasure every moment that you have and remember, time waits for no one.
And
Yesterday is history, tomorrow is a mystery. Today is a gift, that’s why it’s called the present.
Fay will be missed beyond measure.
