Gus "Costas" Renieris, 90, son of the late Aggelis and Maria Renieris of Crete, Greece, was born on October 23, 1928, in Detroit. He died peacefully, surrounded by his loving family, on January 13, 2019. He honorably served in the Korean War for the United States Army. After his discharge, he returned to Detroit and entered the restaurant business with his uncle. Eventually, he became owner and operator of the International Restaurant in Greektown with his friend, the late Stelios Mamalakis. The restaurant was wildly popular and attracted a diverse group of regulars including police officers, Wayne State University students and staff, local news reporters, artists, and musicians. Gus developed countless friendships with his customers through the years, and they kept in touch with him. Selfless and generous, Gus was known to help the homeless and provide meals at his restaurant. "Greektown Stella" could always count on a hot meal served up by Gus himself who always treated her with dignity and respect. Right to the end, Gus always put his needs behind others, making sure everyone was okay. Proud of his roots from the island of Crete, Greece, Gus was a member of Pseloretes chapter of the PanCretan Association of America. His conversations were often peppered with wise Cretan sayings! To his family, Gus was a role model and an inspiration. His advice and guidance were constantly sought. He was like a second father to his nieces and nephews and like a second grandfather to his great nieces and nephews. His incredible sense of humor and Greek Cretan sarcasm had everyone in stitches. Family gatherings were always a delight with Gus at the table! He was deeply loved by his family and will be greatly missed. Heaven has gained a special angel. Gus was dear brother of Athena "Chrisoula" (the late Michael) Dafingas. Loving uncle of Anastasia (Christ) Pitses, Roula (Tony) Lipinski, Manolis (Irini) Lionakis, Stelios (Maria) Lionakis. Also survived by great nieces and nephews, Eleni, Chrisoula, Michael, Nicholas, Kostas, Eleftheria, Nektaria, and Maria. Predeceased by his sister, Ekaterini (the late Kostas), his brother-in-law Michael Dafingas, and great nephew Alexander. In state Friday 9:00 am until time of service, 10:00 am, at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 21800 Marter Road, St. Clair Shores 48080. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions made to Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, or to Alexanders Quest, PO Box 630, Roseville, MI 48066-0630, in memory of great-nephew Alexander Kosta Lipinski, for Spinal Muscular Atrophy research and assistance to families affected by the disease.
