Hanna was born in Wildenfels, Germany to Kurt and Martha Meier on September 13, 1927. Being the oldest of six children, she lived with her beloved Grandparents a few blocks away. She was raised during WWII under Hitler’s regime and then under communist rule post WWII. Being pressured as a young adult to join the communist party, Hanna obtained permission to come to the U.S. in 1949, at the age of 22 years. She settled in Detroit with other German immigrants and learned the trade of making custom lampshades. Through her work, she met and married Alfred J. Beskange. Hanna and Alfred worked together in their business, the Opal Lamp & Furniture Co., in Grosse Pointe, St. Clair Shores and Detroit, until the early 1970’s. Hanna was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Church in Wildenfels, Germany and continued in the Lutheran faith to the end of her life. She was a very active member of Bethany Lutheran Church & School in Detroit for over six decades. Hanna was also active in the Bethany Women’s Guild; the Bethany 55+ Club (hosting many Christmas gatherings); and the German American Cultural Center. Hanna received awards and honors during her years serving both Church and Civic organizations. During the last years of her life, she transferred to Christ the King Lutheran Church in Grosse Pointe Woods, under the Pastoral care of Reverend Randy Boelter.
