Jack Tocco, D.D.S.

Jack Tocco, D.D.S., age 88 died peacefully at his home on Monday, May 31, 2010. Dr. Tocco was born on June 3, 1921 in Sicily, the son of Salvatore and Antonina Tocco. At the age of six, his family immigrated to the United States. Jack attended St. Clare of Montefalco Elementary School and graduated from De La Salle Catholic High School in 1941. Jack attended the Ford Trade School and became a tool and die maker and worked in the industry during the war years. Not wanting to spend the rest of his career in a factory, he went back to college to become a dentist, his lifelong dream. He went on to graduate from the University of Detroit Dental School. His private practice was located at several locations throughout the years, but notably at the Eastland Professional Building and later in Warren near Schoenherr and Eleven Mile Road. Dr. Tocco loved his life's work and didn't retire until age 79. His hobbies included cooking, opera, story and joke telling and his vocation. He was a member of the De La Salle Century Club, the U of D Alumni Association and the American and Michigan Dental Associations. He is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Catherine; four sons, Salvatore (Karen), Jack, Peter, and Anthony (Julie); and his beloved grandchildren, Hollie, Natalie, Anthony, Jr. and Christopher. He was predeceased by his parents, a brother and a sister. Visitation for Dr. Tocco is scheduled from 2:00 to 9:00 pm Thursday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. A scripture service will take place at 7:00 pm on Thursday at the funeral home. His body will lie instate at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford at Morningside, Grosse Pointe Woods from 11:00 am Friday until mass begins at 11:30 am. Reverend Gary Smetanka will officiate. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township. The family has requested that memorials be made to the Beaumont Hospice, c/o Beaumont Foundation, P.O. Box 5802, Troy, MI 48007-5802 or St. Jude Children's Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105-1942.
