James Michael Regan passed away peacefully on June 26, 2026, surrounded by the love of his family. He lived a life defined by devotion to his family, dedication to his work, and an enduring love of sports.
Jim was the beloved husband of Mary Lou, his cherished partner for 53 wonderful years. Together they built a life filled with love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. He was the devoted father of Monica (Troy) Brinkman and Jeff (Erin) Regan. He was a proud Grandpa to Scarlett, Savannah, Sawyer and Sebastian Regan, and Natalie and Lauren Brinkman, who brought him immense joy. Jim is survived by his sister, Meg Regan (Mark) Decker, and John (Kay) Regan, and was preceded in death by his sister Mary Jo Regan Kubinski and brother in law John Kubinski. He was a proud uncle to Elizabeth Kubinski, Sarah (Kubinski) Marler, and David and Nolan Regan.
Born in Hamtramck Michigan to a proud Polish family, Jim attended Orchard Lake St. Mary’s and then earned a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Detroit. Jim proudly served his country in the United States Army Reserves. The discipline, integrity, and determination he developed during his military service remained hallmarks of his character throughout his life, in addition to the lifelong friends he made.
Jim built a dedicated career as a CPA. However, his true joy was found outdoors, particularly on the water as an avid sailor and on the greens chasing the perfect golf swing. Jim and Mary Lou spent their younger years, affectionally referred to as “BK” or “Before Kids”, racing their sailboat, The Deduction. They spent their post-retirement years mastering the fairways and enjoying the camaraderie of the golf course. Yet, nothing quite matched Jim’s absolute devotion to baseball. He spent years coaching Grosse Pointe Woods-Shores Little League Baseball, Neighborhood Club Softball, and had the enjoyment this spring of watching his granddaughters discover their love for playing softball.
A die-hard, lifelong fan, Jim lived and breathed the game through its greatest eras. He grew up marveling at the grace and legendary play of Al Kaline, "Mr. Tiger" himself, who set the standard for what it meant to love the team. Years later, Jim experienced first-hand the absolute thrill of the unforgettable 1984 season, watching the Tigers roar through the summer and claim the World Series championship. One of his greatest memories was being at Comerica Park with his family to see Magglio Ordonez hit a walk off home run in 2006 to send the Tigers to the World Series. Whether listening to Ernie Harwell on the radio, sitting in the stands at historic Tiger Stadium and then Comerica Park, or watching from home, Jim kept a score card by pencil at every game and enjoyed sharing the love of the game with family and friends. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered by all who knew him.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held on September 3, 2026 from 2:00 – 8:00 pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, located at 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Jim’s name to the Detroit Tigers Foundation, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s Polish Institute of Culture & Research Fund, or the American Heart Association.
