Jan was a rock; kind, helpful, steady as I knew him on The News photo desk. A wonderful contributor to the long legacy of The News. My condolences to you all.

Jan led and taught me on the midnight shift in the 1970s editing Metro zone stories and doing page layouts. A calm, kind, thoughtful, smart man. Jan, you made the world better. 

I worked with Jan for many years, and I cannot underestimate how much he taught me. He excelled with a calm hand and a soft voice. It was truly a pleasure to know him.  The world is a little emptier now without Jan. Rest in peace

I valued working with Jan at The Detroit News, where he stood out as a consistently thoughtful, generous, friendly colleague. His no-drama efficiency and calm demeanor were a welcome oasis amid the frenzy of a zany newsroom, and had a quieting impact on others.

Those of us who knew Jan at the Detroit News remember him as a very talented, kind newsman. 

It took till Saturday morning for the news of your family's loss to reach the Airzona desert. As we still use the Pony Express here and the local tribes provide road and trail blocks to keep things interesting. The years of working with Jan with the change over to Digital Photography were extreamly interesting and full of challenges but we both survived.

Jan was the rock of The Detroit News news desk. When a big story broke he was calm and knew how to direct the staff. He also had an understated sense of humor and a smile that made work fun. 

Jan was the best of the best, as a colleague and friend. He guided me, supported me and made me laugh. He defined the word “colleague” and was as loyal and steady as anyone I’ve ever worked with. I’ll always treasure his words of wisdom, but just as much I loved seeing the sparkle in his eye when he spoke of family - which truly meant everything to him. When I left the News, Jan came to my farewell party and handed me a small compass, telling me it would always guide me. He didn’t need a compass; his family was his true north. 

Jan was a terrific journalist and first class man. Cool headed and professional. I’m fortunate to have had a chance to work with him.

Jan was without a doubt the most decent and compassionate person I ever worked with.  I don’t think I could have gotten through some tough times at the newspaper without him, and it was an honor to be his friend. I’ll always remember him. My deepest sympathies to Beverly and the family. 

I worked with Jan at The News and will always remember him as one of the nicest people in the newsroom. My sympathies to his family. 

My deepest sympathy to Jan’s family, I had the pleasure of working with him in The Detroit News photo dept. One of my first conversations with him was my first week out on an assignment, new to Detroit, I got lost  (preGoogle Maps/Mapquest..iPhones), I called the office and Jan answered. I tried to tell him where I was..which happened to be Dequindre Street he laughed so hard at me trying to pronounce it. Always appreciated that laugh and how much of an asset he was to our department. Glad our paths crossed. 

Dear Bev and family, I'm so sorry for your loss. Jan was a great guy, fun to be around, he will be missed.

Our love and condolences to Jan's family and friends. We spent many years celebrating holidays (especially Christmas) with the clan, so to speak, festive and fun. Jan was a good man to be around with and I know my family will miss him.
