John Edward Moran O.D.

Dr. John E. Moran O.D. age 96, a resident of Grosse Pointe Woods, passed away Saturday, January 26, 2019 at his home. He was born February 12, 1922 in Kingston, Ontario, Canada to Vincent and Rose (nee Keys) Moran. John graduated from St. Ambrose Catholic School and went on to earn his diploma at Detroit Catholic Central High School. After graduation John was drafted in to the U. S. Army on November 21, 1942. John served our country during WWII. he was a part of Company A, 20th Armored Infantry Battalion, 10th Armored Division, known as the "Tiger Division". In his time serving our country John faced many heroic endeavors including fierce combat and the liberation of a concentration camp. He didn't speak of his time in the military often, but his name is adorned on a plaque at the Grosse Pointe War Memorial. After serving the country John used the G.I. Bill and attended Illinois College of Optometry where he earned his Doctorate of Optometry. He began his career in Detroit on Jefferson Avenue and later moved in 1967 to the Grosse Pointe Woods location of his own practice. John worked into his mid 80's before he retired. John enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family. Beloved husband of the late Dorothy. Loving father of John, Kathleen Clawson, Michael (Debbie), Mary, Joseph, and Edward (Annette). Dear grandfather of Connor, Trevor, Michael, Anthony, Will, and Eric Moran; Laura (Justin) Elwood, David and John Clawson. Great-grandfather of Shawn and Ethan Clawson. Loved uncle of Pat, Joanie, and Neil Moran. John was preceded in death by his parents, Vincent and Rose; siblings, Joseph and Arthur. Visitation Wednesday from 4-8 PM with a rosary 7 PM at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave. at Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236. In state Thursday 9:30 AM until time of funeral Mass 10 AM at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Mack Ave, St. Clair Shores, MI 48080.
