

Jospeh E. Carter, age 91, died peacefully on November 22, 2012 at his home in Pine Ridge of Garfield in Clinton Township. Joe was born on June 17, 1921 in Vestiburg, Pennsylvania the son of Joseph and Marie Carter. Joe grew up in the Pittsburgh area and graduated from the University of Pittsburgh with a Bachelor of Science degree in Metallurgical Engineering. He worked his entire life in the steel business. His first job out of college was at U.S. Steel in Pittsburgh. Soon after, he enlisted in the US Navy and served his country until the war ended. During the war, while home on leave, he married his wife Mary on December 8, 1944 in Connecticut. After the war, he worked a short time in Syracuse, New York before moving to Detroit in 1951. In Detroit, Joe worked for Alloy Steel, Crucible Steel and Universal Cyclops. He was known for his knowledge of speciality steels and its machine tooling. Joe was a former member of Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield and a proud, longtime member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church in St. Clair Shores. Joe enjoyed golf and was a history buff. He is survived by his three daughters, Cynthia Campbell, Elaine Kuttner (Peter) and Beth Carter; his five grandchildren, Mark, Scott, Kyle, Paul and Michael; and two great-grandchildren Melanie and Erikson. Joe was predeceased by his wife Mary in 2006. Funeral services will be private.
