

Lifelong Grosse Pointe Woods resident Juliette G. Zaranek, 92, passed away peacefully Thursday, July 18, 2013 at Beaumont Hospital-Grosse Pointe. She was born October 5, 1920 at Cottage Hospital in Grosse Pointe to Jules and Zelma DePorre. Jules was a builder and the mayor of the Village of Lochmoor as it became the Village of Grosse Pointe Woods in 1939. Mrs. Zaranek grew up in Grosse Pointe attending the original Kerby elementary school. She then began second grade at the newly opened Mason elementary school in 1929. Mrs. Zaranek also attended St. Paul on the Lake and Grosse Pointe High School. After high school, Mrs. Zaranek attended and graduated from the Detroit Business Institute. In her later years, Mrs. Zaranek enjoyed visiting Mason School and engaging the children with stories on the history of Grosse Pointe. After high school graduation, Juliette met Casimir Zaranek in Chicago. Casey served in the Pacific theatre during World War II and the two were married on the Fort Lewis Army Base in Olympia, Washington in 1944. Mrs. Zaranek worked as a legal secretary until the end of the war. Shortly after the war, the two moved into her childhood home in Grosse Pointe Woods. Here, she and Casey raised their five sons. After 56 years of marriage, Casey passed away in 2000. Mrs. Zaranek is survived by her children, Pierre (Gail), Louis (Cheryl), Richard (Patricia), Stephen, and Robert (Elizabeth) along with 15 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren. Mrs. Zaranek remained very active over the years in her beloved Grosse Pointe community as a member of numerous school and youth groups. She served on many church committees and in the choir as a life long member of St. Joan of Arc and stayed very involved in the local government including the Grosse Pointe Woods Historical Commission. In 2006, she received a special citation from the City of Grosse Pointe Woods for her lifetime of work and dedication to her community. In addition to her husband and parents, Mrs. Zaranek was predeceased by her brothers Jules, James, and Pierre DePorre and sisters Zelma Defever and Denise DePorre. Her body will lie instate at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack at Overlake in St. Clair Shores (MI 48080) from 9:30 a.m. Monday until mass begins at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow immediately after mass at St. Michael's Cemetery in Richmond, MI.
