My condolences to Kai’s family. I’ve been doing her braided crochet for the last 5 years and I posted a video of her today on my page rockthefro. It prompted a friend of hers to update me on her passing. I’ve only had great memories and appointments with her. I’m so sorry for your loss.

A Letter to Kai

I can still smell the cinnamon and coffee lingering in her Rivertown loft. The Keurig hummed softly, chairs groaned as we gathered, and somehow the place felt warmer because Kai walked through the door. That same warmth, that same love, she leaves with us now.

Kai was more than a cousin to me; she was a sister in every meaningful sense. If Kai loved you, you felt it in every laugh, every text, every time she answered the phone. We spoke a language built on shared jokes and generous conversations, often ending the day with one of our favorite movie quotes—“I was watching cops” or “there’s so many activities.” It never failed to bring tears of laughter. Those lines weren’t just humor; they were our quiet vow: “We’ve got this,” and “We’ve got each other.”

Kai had an extraordinary gift for listening. Truly listening. And when she spoke, it came with care, insight, and tenderness that cut through the noise. I’ve lost count of how many times she picked up the phone to check in, to remind me I wasn’t alone, or to promise she’d call back if she couldn’t answer right away.

Kai’s heart was vast. She loved Brandon, and Brandon loved Kai. Their love shone for all to see. I recall the first time I met Brandon. Kai called me and said, “I want you and Justin to meet somebody.” I was probably at work, tired from the day, but I carved out the moment to meet him, and I liked him instantly. Even then, I could tell he cared about my cousin. Their partnership is a shining example of walking through life as teammates, celebrating every small victory and standing firm through every trial.

Kai, you taught us so much about life. How to dress with intention, listen with our whole hearts, love without reservation, and laugh until our sides hurt. You showed us that loyalty isn’t loud but steady, always there when you need it most.

Her heart was big enough for all of us, and ours is bigger for having known her.

RIP Kai, I'll see you again!

I’ll never forget how I used to look for you when auntie Sue used to babysit us at her house. You were the coolest, the sweetest and a humble individual. You made sure to uplift others even when you were down. I’ll always remember how you stopped everything you were doing to help me apply for a job with DTE. You always text me back and listen to me when I was going through small or big woes. Thank you for always being real and authentically you. I’m so happy Brandon shared his life with you and loved you so dearly. I miss you Kai, until I see you again.

I struggled writing this as it's hard for me to understand why your earthly journey ended so soon. Kai was like the big sister I didn’t realize I needed—beautiful, wise, and full of light. Her laughter and kindness shaped my youth and will stay with me forever. Though her physical presence will surely be missed, her spirit shines on, free and radiant. I have always admired you my whole life. You were beautiful, articulate, funny and a great dresser. We always shared designer tips, personal stories and experiences. I looked up to you when I was young and all the while never knowing it was you who admired me. I remember your kind words and gentle smiles. It was a cold snowey day in February she made her way in this world with a bang and we were all waiting for her arrival. On a warm day in October she left us without a warning. Kai was a BEAUTIFUL person inside and out. Here it all begins - I have worked for Sue (Mom) for 20 YEARS! I became close to the family. When I watched the little tots I always looked out the window. I would run to the stairs to make sure I said hi to Kai because I adored her magnetic personality and beautiful smile. 

She had such a way of lighting up every room she entered. Even the name of her clothing store was so perfectly her - Unique, full of life, and impossible to forget. That name spoke volumes about her vibrant spirit and the creativity she poured into everything she did.

I was very fortunate to have Kai assist me for many years in my hair salon. I always enjoyed her ability to amuse my clients and myself. I met Kai as a very young child and watched her grow into a beautiful woman. Her humor and frankness were top notch! Kai will be greatly missed! Kai was such a beautiful person, so loving & giving. She made my days at Blue Cross & Blue Shield fun! Kai had chic fashion sense,  and wore the coolest eye make up! Rest well, baby girl.
