Kathleen O'Rourke Lang Kathleen died on March 11, 2015, at the age of 100. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, one of seven children. As a child, she learned Scottish dances such as the Highland Fling and the Sword Dance. When she was ten, she came with her family to the U.S. They settled in Detroit and she attended school at St Anthony's Parish. That's also where she met her future husband and her five lifelong girlfriends. When she left school, she worked as a stenographer at a radio station. She married Frank in 1941. In 1943, their first child, Richard, was born. Shortly after, Frank went into the Navy and Kathleen was left to manage things by herself until he was discharged in 1945. They then bought a home in Harper Woods. Their daughter, Joan, was born in 1947, followed by Alan in 1953 and Ronald in 1958. She did not work outside the home at this time. Kathleen was widowed in 1967. Once again, left alone to care for the children by herself. When they were older, she started working at a Hallmark store at Eastland Center. In addition, she volunteered at the Capuchin Soup Kitchen and at a nursing home, belonged to a card group, joined the Third Order of St. Francis, and was active at Our Lady Queen of Peace Parish, where she was a member of the Altar Society, helped distribute communion, and organized the yearly women's retreat. She was also able to do some traveling. She started vacationing with her five friends every fall at different Michigan cottages. She also went on a European tour and several years after that, she visited Ireland. Kathleen is survived by her daughter, Joan Lang-Hirst (late Clint Hirst), her sons Alan (Cathy), and Ron (Allison Kuhnlein), her six grandchildren: Brian, Amanda Hirst Davids (Tim), Adam Hirst, Jack, Greta, and Olivia, and by her great-granddaughter, Emily Davids.
