In the early 1970s, Kathi lived in Australia for two years. After leaving Australia, she spent another year traveling through Southeast Asia, Russia, and Europe before settling in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, in 1975. She earned a Master of Social Work in 1977 and began her career with the Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office, where she served as Director of Victim Services. During her time there, she was among a small group of colleagues who helped draft the Victim Rights Statute, which later became part of the Michigan Constitution.
While working full-time, she attended law school at night beginning at age 38. In 1989, she joined the Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office as an Assistant Prosecutor and dedicated the remainder of her career to public service, retiring in 2013.
She was deeply involved in Democratic politics, serving eight years on the Democratic State Central Committee and participating in numerous political campaigns throughout her life.
Outside of her professional life, she was an avid University of Michigan football fan and a talented quilter. She valued lifelong learning, public service, and strong personal relationships.
She is survived by the adult children of her long-term partner, John McCann: Meaghan McCann (James Leginza) of Plymouth and Sean McCann (Priscilla Lambert) of Kalamazoo; four step-grandchildren and many dear friends whose lives she touched over the years.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Forgotten Harvest.
A memorial service will be held at a later date. We will post when updates are available.
