Leona A. Dunn

Leona A. Dunn, age 81, died peacefully at her home on January 23, 2013 after a long illness. She was born on August 28, 1931 in East Detroit, Michigan. She grew up on Whittier Avenue in Detroit and attended St. Matthew Elementary School, Dominican High School and the University of Detroit. Leona worked at Ross Roy Advertising Agency in Detroit in its billing department. It was there that she met Jim Dunn, whom she married on June 19, 1954 at Old St. Mary Catholic Church Downtown in Greektown. They made there home in Detroit for 20 years and then in Grosse Pointe Woods for 21 years. Since 2005 they have lived in St. Clair, Michigan. Leona was a proud stay-at-home mom. She enjoyed gardening, shopping, cooking and hosting parties. She was the Beautification Director on the Board of Directors at the River Colony in St. Clair where they lived. She is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, Jim; her three children, Gloria Spath Coleman (Michael), Michael (Josephine Savalle) and Timothy (Elizabeth); her five grandchildren who affectionately referred to her as "Mamu", Michael and James Spath and Michelle Anderson (Jeff), Kelly Mahalak (Dan) and Brian Dunn; four step-grandchildren, Robert, Matthew (Erin), Stephen (Vanessa) and Kevin Coleman (Colleen); three great-grandchildren, Brooklyn Anderson, and Ashton and Evie Mahalak; and one great-step-grandson, Chase Coleman. She was predeceased by her son-in-law, John Spath and her grandson, Johnny Spath. A memorial mass will be celebrated at 10 o'clock Monday morning at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack at Overlake in St. Clair Shores. Monsignor G. Michael Burgarin will officiate. The family will receive friends after 9:30 a.m. Monday in the Gathering Space at Church.
