

Lionel "John" Hayes died peacefully in his home in Grosse Pointe Woods on July 2. He was born on October 7, 1921 in Preston, England. At the age of 2 his family moved to Detroit, Michigan. He was a graduate of Cooley High School in Detroit and Ohio State University. He obtained his citizenship in order to enlist in the Army at the start of World War II. He served as a cartographer in France. When WW II ended he came home to marry his fianc, Mary Jane Jones. They had met at Fort Riley, Kansas, at the USO club where he played the piano and she sang. They were blessed with two daughters, Holly and Cathy, graduates of Grosse Pointe South High School, and a son, John, graduate of Grosse Pointe North High School. John began his business career as a salesman for Montgomery Ward in Kansas. Moving back to Detroit he became a manager for Cunningham Drugs. Then later he became a manager for Serling Drug Company. He was the founder and CEO of Hayes Retail Services until he retired at the age of 80. During his 61 years of marriage John and Mary Jane traveled to Europe, Hawaii, to his lake house in Port Huron, timeshare in Fort Meyers, and all across the United States. He especially enjoyed his friends in the American Legion Post of Grosse Pointe for over 30 years, golf, tennis, bridge, and sing along parties where he played the piano and Mary Jane played the base. He is survived by his children Holly (Stephen) Anderson, Catherine (David) Tyler, and John P. Hayes; four grandchildren (Mary Anderson, Stephanie Anderson, David Tyler, and John Paul Hayes), and three great-grandchildren (Tomas Negron, Lydia Negron, and Alexa Tyler).
