Lorraine Theresa Costello

Lorraine T. Costello, age 79, died peacefully on March 28, 2011 at Henry Ford Macomb Hospital in Clinton Township. Lorraine was born in Detroit on July 30, 1931, the daughter of Orrin and Mary Gentner. She grew up on Algonquin Street on Detroit's eastside and graduated from St. Philip Neri Catholic High School in 1949. Lorraine began her career working at Woolworth's. Later she worked four years at Stroh's Brewery as a secretary and became the personal secretary for Peter Stroh. She was married to George Costello on July 19, 1952 at St. Philip Neri Church and left Stroh's to begin her family. Lorraine embraced her role as a mother and grandmother. Her strong Catholic faith was an inspiration and example for her children. The family were members of St. Jude parish in Detroit and her three children attended grade school there. She was a supervisor of the lunch program at St. Jude School. She loved to shop and always had a keen eye for bargains and sales. Later in life, Lorraine enjoyed caring for her grandchildren, bowling and loved Traverse City. Mrs. Costello is survived by her three children, Lynn Helmniak, Mary Jo Pickelhaupt (Terry), and Thomas Costello (Anne Marie); her seven grandchildren, Melissa, Charlotte, Stephanie, Katelynn, Karlye, Nicholas and Michael; and her sister, Shirley Bialk. She was predeceased by George, her husband of 55 years in 2007. Visitation is scheduled from 3:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Thursday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. Thursday. Her body will lie instate at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack at Overlake Street in St. Clair Shores from 9:30 a.m. Friday until mass begins at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township. The family has requested memorial donations be made to Alzheimer's Association, (alz.org), 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17; Chicago, IL 60601-7633.
