Mahmoud (“Moody”) Mohamed Selim, 95, passed away peacefully on 28th August, 2022 with his family by his side after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. Beloved husband of Maureen Selim, father of Nadia Selim Little (Jim), Alexandra Selim Theisen (Sean) and Vanessa Selim (Paul Williams) and grandfather of Steven Theisen, Andrew Theisen, Ian Theisen, Grace Williams and Colin Williams.
Moody was born to Hamdiya Ismail Haqi and Mohamed Selim on 31st January, 1927 in Cairo, Egypt. He grew up in a family of five brothers and one sister and is survived by his brother Kamal Mohamed Selim of Cairo. He graduated from Ain Shams University (formerly el-Demerdash Faculty of Medicine) in December, 1950.
He left Egypt for London, England in 1954, where he completed his medical residency in Ear, Nose and Throat medicine and surgery and met his future wife, nursing student Maureen Stevens, at Barnet General Hospital in north London. After a first glance in a hospital corridor and subsequent meeting at a friend’s birthday party, Maureen and Moody met to depart for an outing at the Totteridge & Whetstone underground station in London and the rest is history. They married on 2nd April, 1960 and moved to the United States in July of 1960, where they briefly lived in Traverse City, Michigan before moving to Detroit.
Moody practiced as a surgeon and an Ear, Nose and Throat specialist in Warren, Michigan and raised his daughters with Maureen in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. He loved Baroque classical music and was passionate about travel, returning to visit family in Egypt and England many times throughout the years. All the family have many happy memories of time spent with uncles, aunts and cousins and visits to London, the English countryside and Cairo.
Moody was very outgoing and loved meeting people. He wanted to learn about others, their backgrounds and their work and he made many friends throughout the years. To the delight of his family, Moody would be found chatting to acquaintances just about anywhere he went.
More than anything, Moody loved his family. He enjoyed spending time with his wife, children and grandchildren, always looking forward to the next family gathering. The pursuit of education was extremely important to Moody, and he encouraged his children, grandchildren and all young people he met to complete advanced levels of study and to pursue their careers with dedication.
The family would like to thank the caregivers at StoryPoint Senior Living in Saline, Michigan who kindly helped care for Moody in the final two years of his life.
Services will be held at A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236 on Tuesday Noon. The family will be accepting Friends and family beginning at 11 AM.
