Passions & pleasures:
Sailboat racing & Snow skiing.
Accomplished at both, Matt was a member of the University of Michigan Sailing Team.
After College, Matt took his love of sailing with him as he moved to Washington, DC, where he spent weekends racing on the Chesapeake, out of Annapolis.
Matt never missed an opportunity to join his family and friends for ski adventures, whether in Michigan, Colorado, Utah or California.
After graduating from UofM, Matt moved to Washington DC, joining the staff of Colorado Representative Scott McInnis (R), a job Matt thoroughly enjoyed. He later became Personal Aide to US Senator George Voinovich (R) Ohio. In this role, Matt was at the Senator’s side virtually every minute of the workday, helping write his speeches or cooling his heels in the West Wing of the White House, waiting while “the boss” met with the President and his team.
Matt arrived in DC just weeks before 9/11. He was on the Hill when DC was shut down. His car was towed away from the Capital, causing him to walk home, to Georgetown, when the area was evacuated.
He commented as to how surreal an experience it was, walking the streets of Northwest DC, with jet fighters flying low patterns over the City, protecting it. Matt loved DC and his time there almost as much as he loved sailing and skiing …. Almost!
He moved back to Grosse Pointe, using his law degree for his career in Mortgage Compliance Law with jobs at HomePointe Financial and Flagstar Bank.
The real love and joy of his life is his Son, Keelen.
Matt and Kristy met in Grosse Pointe and married in 2014 in Petoskey, MI. Together with their son, Keelen, Matt and Kristy enjoyed traveling. They visited family in San Diego, San Francisco, Tucson, Nashville, Washington DC and Northern Michigan. They also took several very memorable cruises, visited Mexico, Texas, and Florida many times, especially Orlando and Miami. Plus many short trips to Boyne, Frankenmuth and Kahlahari to hit the water parks with his family. Matt was an avid reader and writer. He had long been working on a Sherlock Holmes style novel set mainly in San Francisco during the Gilded Age/late 19th century. Matt also very much enjoyed working in the yard, and decorating it for the holidays. He had a passion and skill for the culinary arts. He was an artist who drew some very lovely cityscapes, an interest which he shared with Keelen. Matt loved meals out with his family and loved swimming and spending time at the park in Grosse Pointe Shores, where he lived with Kristy and Keelen and their cats, Dusty and Moscow—who he named after a character in one of his favorite series. Matt was the love and center of both Kristy and Keelen’s lives and neither of them could ever get enough of time spent together as a family. He was deeply cherished and will be greatly missed.
Gone too soon!
God Bless!
