Burial at Resurrection Cemetery. A Tribute To Her Grandfather by Trina Mannino Last night, we lost a fiery spirit. A day after his 92nd birthday, my Grandpa passed surrounded by family, including my Grandmother who held his hand until the end. He was certainly far from perfect, but I got to give it to him: the man knew how to make an impression. Adventurous and industrious, he lived life on his own terms. Enlisting in the navy when he was 18, he was relegated to kitchen duty at one point, and taught the head chef how to make his mother's "real" sauce (they were using ketchup before). According to my grandfather, the head chef was fired soon after, and he went from 2nd class seaman to 3rd class petty officer cook. Later, he fell through the ice countless times, making local news once, while ice fishing on Lake St. Clair. He built houses from the ground up, having experienced too many accidents to count. He fell off roofs, intentionally (and unintentionally) started fires, you name it. We thought the man had nine lives. When I moved to New York, he gave me the simple advice, "Fake it until you make it." At the time, I thought it wasn't much help. But here I am almost ten years in New York, and every audition I've attended, and every pitch and proposal I've submitted, I think of it when the thoughts of doubt creep in. Thanks Grandpa. May your one-liners live on.
