

Raymond J. Fuhrman, age 91, died on May 13, 2013 at St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit after a short illness. Ray was born at home in Dearborn on October 3, 1921 the second oldest of nine, the children of John and Cecilia Fuhrman. Raymond grew up in Dearborn and graduated from Sacred Heart High School. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the United States Army and served his country for four years. He was part of the 832nd Aviation Engineers Battalion. After serving his country, Ray attended Engineering School for two years at the University of Detroit. In 1950, Ray married Nancy-Ellen Hayes at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Dearborn. They started married life living in Detroit and in 1954 moved to St. Clair Shores. Ray was an automotive salesman and retired from Rinke Pontiac in Warren in 1987. Ray was very active at his church. He served as a Eucharistic minister and lector at St. Joan of Arc Church and a Eucharistic minister on Sundays at St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus, St. Joan of Arc Council. Ray was a devoted familyman who loved to cook and bake. He doted on his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and encouraged them to be active in their faith. He told them to trust in the Lord and not to worry because everything would work out in the end. They fondly remember "Poppa" bringing home baked goods from Josef's on Saturday and Sunday mornings. He sponsored four of his grandsons for their Confirmations. For almost 14 years, Ray was the devoted caregiver for his loving wife. Ray is survived by his wife, Nancy-Ellen; their four children, Nancy Lee (Paul) Marzolino, Deborah (Mark) Summers, Raymond John and Marguerite (Joseph) Krafchak and he was "Poppa" to his 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his siblings, Marie Lilyhorn, Earl Fuhrman, Eileen McCoy, Jack Fuhrman, William Fuhrman, and Phyllis Fuhrman; and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents and his brothers, Bernard and Lawrence. Visitation will be from 6:00 to 9:00 pm on Tuesday and 2:00 to 9:00 pm on Wednesday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7 o'clock Wednesday evening. His body will lie instate at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack, St. Clair Shores from 9:30 am Thursday until mass begins at 10 o'clock. Monsignor G. Michael Bugarin will officiate. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
