I worked with Dick at the Freep and was always delighted when I bumped over the years. If he was half as great a guy at home as he was at work, you're a very lucky family. He did me many small favors -- asked and unasked -- over the years, and I greatly admired his work. The one I most cherish is an illustration he did of me and my husband for an "Action Line" story on our first anniversary. It has long been a delightful aspect of my home decor. The world could use more people like him.

Betty, Lisa, Kim & Gary, please know we are keeping you in our thoughts and prayers. The memories of seeing Dick at Ward's are near, and also very dear right now. He was always upbeat and kind to all of the Kelley kids, whether we were just stopping in, or working there during our summer vacations, as so many of us did. Dick's annual Christmas card was quite the big deal at our house, provoking more than a few skirmishes among the kids so we could have our own chance to read all of the names in it. This pattern was replicated the morning the card appeared in the Freep, all of us wanting to pore over it, once again searching the names for our heroes, and our goats. One of my most treasured possessions is the incredible drawing he did for my father's retirement. It is a caricature of Roger done in the style of his inimitable Christmas cards. In this case he used the names of people and places and events that marked the milestones for our Dad. It was a stunning gift at Roger's party and remains so today. We are blessed to have known Dick. Lisa, Robert, Natasha, and Max I was shocked to open the paper and see the news, I have heard great things about Richard over the years, and enjoyed his drawings, they gave me inspiration for my own drawings and illustrations. Dear Mayer Family, Dick will be missed by many. He was truly one of the nicest and most gentle people I ever met. We worked in the same building on Adams Street in downtown Detroit, before Wards moved to its current location. He'd come down to our office to pick up type now and again and it was always fun to see him. He did some special things for my co-workers and I'll always remember those gestures. He was one of a kind in so many ways. I'm very glad I had the opportunity to know him.
