

Richard L. Mortenson, age 81, died peacefully on February 14, 2014 at Sunrise on Vernier in Grosse Pointe Woods. Richard was born on September 12, 1932 in Detroit. He grew up on Detroit's eastside and graduated from Denby High School. He played on the water polo, ice hockey, baseball and football teams at Denby. Richard enlisted in the United States Army and served for two years. When he returned home, he enrolled in the Detroit Police Academy and became a police officer. He worked most of his career at the First Precinct in downtown Detroit. He became a sergeant and later attained the rank of lieutenant before his retirement in 1981. After retirement, he moved to Scottsdale, AZ and spent the next 10 years there. He enjoyed spring training and the baseball teams participating in the Cactus League. Dick was a boater on the Detroit River and kept his boat at Jefferson Beach Marina in St. Clair Shores. He also enjoyed reading, swimming, and hockey. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus and the Detroit Police Lieutenants & Sergeants Association. Richard is survived by his sister, Patti Arkell; two nephews, James and Jeff Arkell; two great-nephews, James and Easton; and two great-nieces, Emma and Claire. He is also survived by his dear friend, Lana. Visitation will be held from 3:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. The Holy Rosary will be recited beginning at 7:00 o'clock Tuesday evening. His body will lie instate at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack in St. Clair Shores from 9:30 a.m. Wednesday until mass begins at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Detroit. The family has suggested memorial contributions be made to Michigan Parkinson Foundation; 30400 Telegraph Road, Suite 150; Bingham Farms, MI 48025.
