Richard Russell Rutherford

It is with heavy heart that we announce the passing of Richard Russell Rutherford (Dick), born May 22, 1936 in Detroit Michigan to the late Russell and Loretta Rutherford. Dick passed away peacefully at St. John’s Hospital in Detroit on Friday, Oct. 28, 2022.

Dick is survived by his loving wife of 37 years, Diane Bott Rutherford and his daughters Tracey Henkel (Jim); and Jill Romatz (Rick). He is also survived by his two step children Raymond Malo (Dan) and Kathleen Malo; 8 grandchildren: Brett, Todd, Jillian, Shelby, Brendon, Jacqueline, Amber and Austin; and 5 great grandchildren Nico, Camden, Elle, Raven and Rory.

After graduation from Denby High School in Detroit, Dick joined the Navy where he served on a destroyer and enjoyed the role of being the Captain’s personal pilot. Dick always took pride in his military service and credited it for teaching him self-discipline, a superior work ethic, and sense of duty to his country. After serving his country, Dick attended night school while managing several jobs. He earned a degree in Engineering, Dick landed a job with Chrysler where he worked his way up to the executive level overseeing the building of Chrysler plants in the Detroit area. He had the good fortune to retire early at age 55.

Post retirement Dick was an avid golfer, fisherman and boater. He and his wife Diane lived life to the fullest enjoying their time together in Grosse Pointe and Gaylord, MI and Jensen Beach, FL. Dick was fun, outgoing, witty and candid. When asked how he was, he always replied “If I was any better I’d be twins.” He will be sorely missed.

Visitation will be held for Dick Wednesday, November 2, 2022 from 3PM-8PM at A.H. Peters Funeral Home. A Funeral Service will be held Thursday, November 3, 2022 at 10AM, with instate at 9AM, at A.H. Peters Funeral Home (20705 Mack Ave. Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.)
