Rodger Thomas Sulad died March 21 after a valiant struggle with multiple health issues. He was born January 23, 1931, the eldest child of Conrad and Bernice Sulad. He leaves behind his wife Darlene of almost 40 years, his son Jeffrey and his daughter Carole (Cindy), as well as his sister Diana West. His sister, Madeleine Sulad predeceased him. Rodger was very active in his career, his church and the community. He received degrees from MSU, WSU and U of M. He was a teacher, a coach and a counselor and then became a school administrator in Warren Woods Public Schools and retired after 35 years of service. After retirement, he worked at WSU for nine years in their teacher training program furthering his commitment to the value of education. Rodger loved tennis, which he learned from his father at the Indian Village Tennis Club (IVTC). Rodger quickly became very proficient at the game and won just about every tournament he entered at IVTC. Even two titanium knees didnt slow him down! He served as the clubs Treasurer and President, and many good times were had at IVTC. Rodger and Darlene supported the club socially and financially. The Sulads were members of Grosse Pointe Congregational Church, where Rodger held many positions of leadership, including the churchs Moderator. Up until recently, he rarely missed a Sunday service. Rodger was a past President of the Grosse Pointe Senior Mens Club and he especially enjoyed singing in the chorus - fondly referred to as the Boys of Noise! Up until the past few months, Rodger was an enthusiastic singer. He was allowed to sit and sing when his legs couldnt stand for long periods of time. Rodger and Darlene were members of the Nomads Travel Club and had the opportunity to travel over 200,000 miles with them to all parts of the globe. A highlight was a trip around the world in 2004. Rodger was an active volunteer in the community, including giving time to his church, The Detroit Institute for Ophthalmology and Beaumont Hospital where he served for over 16 years. In 2004, Services for Older Citizens recognized both he and Darlene for long term dedication and service to the community. Rodger loved his home, his wife and children, and spending time with them. In the summer a preferred activity was to sit on the patio looking at the lake and watching Darlene plant flowers. In the cooler months, he was inside cheering on the Michigan Wolverines. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 29, at 11:00 am at the Grosse Pointe Congregational Church, 240 Chalfonte, Grosse Pointe Farms 48236 Memorial donations can be made to the church.
