Born in Detroit on April 4, 1935, she was the daughter of Robert and Gretchen Highfield. Sally married Sam Mackool on June 14, 1953. Sally was a faithful member of the St. George Antiochian Orthodox Church community.
She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, remembered for her playfulness and her ability to make each family member feel special. She played catch with her kids and taught her grandchildren how to dance and whistle. She found joy in the unique personalities of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who always brought a smile to her face.
Sally was known for being everyone’s best friend. She cherished time with the people she loved and kept a tireless social calendar, meeting friends for coffee or lunch, going out for family dinners, and making regular phone calls to elementary school classmates well into her 90s.
Sally had impeccable style. She delighted in finding the perfect outfit and dressing up for special occasions, and she loved shopping for herself and her family.
Sally is remembered for hosting wonderful Christmas breakfasts and for passing on the family’s traditional Syrian meals. She was a warrior, living with stage IV lung cancer for nearly a decade and never missing a beat.
She had a warm and kind presence and a unique ability to put a room at ease. Everyone who met Sally loved her, and so many of us were lucky to be loved by her. We’ll never forget her generosity, her perfect comedic timing, and her famous spaghetti sauce.
She is survived by her children Michael (Linda), Lynn (Rodney) Campbell, and Sam (Cathleen); her 9 grandchildren; and her 11 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Sam; her daughter Cindy (Jerry) Victorson; and her grandchild, Jason.
