Sandra K Witt, age 80, of Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan passed away on Sunday, March 17, 2024. Sandra was born in Minneapolis, MN on July 14, 1943. Time spent on a relative’s farm generated a life-long love of animals. In 1967, she graduated from Wayne State University in Detroit, MI, where she met Donald Witt. “Marrying Don was the best thing that ever happened to me!” she often said. Throughout their marriage the pair shared a mutual appreciation of art and music, and a strong devotion to family.
Sandra’s degree in Spanish came in handy when the couple moved to Madrid with their young child, Michele. Subsequently, the Witts moved back to Detroit and Don joined the family business, Painters’ Supply. Before long, the birth of daughter Heather completed the family. Later on, two pet cats, Sol and Thor, joined the household.
As her daughters got older, Sandra went to work at Solomon Friedman Advertising where she worked for 25 years as an accounts executive. During this time she fulfilled a childhood dream of owning a horse and practicing dressage. Don joined her on trail riding adventures in Banff National Park, Canada and Canyon de Chelly, AZ. An annual trip to a cabin near Platt Lake was a time to enjoy time with members of Don’s extended family.
Always the nurturer, Sandra showed love for her family through food. In the ‘70s, Julia Child’s Mastering the Art of French Cooking say alongside How to be a Sneaky Organic Chef on her kitchen bookshelf. She loved hosting dinners for Don’s extended family on Easter and 4th of July –and always made sure her siblings were invited! At Christmas and birthdays, “gifties” were beautifully wrapped and lavishly bestowed.
After they retired, the birth of Heather’s daughter Zoe brought Sandra and Don closer as they had more time to devote to their grandchild. They especially loved taking her on Disney cruises.
In her spare time, Sandra enjoyed reading and studying history. She visited Teddy Roosevelt’s ranch in Medora, SD, Normandy Beach in France, and the most westerly site of the Lewis and Clark expedition. She attended the annual Shakespeare Festival with daughter Michele, and the ballet with sister Marilyn. Sandra and Don had season tickets to the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, and took trips to the great art museum of Madrid, Paris, and London together.
Sandra is survived by her husband Don, her daughters Michele and Heather, her granddaughter Zoe, her siblings Marilyn Sitaker and Richard Hunsaker II. She is preceded in death by her parents, Thelma and Richard Hunsaker and her in-laws, Lodge and Marcella Witt.
