

Shirley M. Martin, age 81, passed peacefully on September 3, 2016. She was a lifelong resident of Grosse Pointe, MI and Naples, FL. Born in Detroit in 1935 to Augusta Screpnek and Anton Valke, she was married to her best friend of 60 years, Richard Martin. Together, they raised their family in Grosse Pointe including one son, Rich (Melissa) of Hood River, OR and four daughters: Renee (John) Seago of Grosse Pointe, Debora (Patrick) Murray of Grosse Pointe, Kelly Martin-Rahaim of Grosse Pointe, and Susan Martin of Holland. She is survived by her 5 children, 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. Shirley was an active member of the Grosse Pointe community where she was loved by so many she touched in her lifetime. After raising her family, Shirley went back to college and obtained a degree in education, teaching at Our Lady Star of the Sea and the Grosse Pointe Schools. Gardening was her passion, and she made the world a more beautiful place. She was a Master Gardener for many years, was an active member of the Grosse Pointe Garden Center, and was a dedicated advocate for children's gardening. Shirley was very strong in her Catholic faith and she had no doubt that God would bring her Home peacefully. Visitation will be held at A. H. Peters, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, on Wednesday 9/7 from 2:00-9:00PM with a rosary at 7:00PM. Instate at St. Paul on the Lake on Thursday 9/8 at 9:30AM followed by mass at 10:00AM. Memorial contributions can be made to the Capuchin Mission of Detroit.
