Dr. Shirley Wendt died Sunday, December 22, 2008 at St. John's Hospital. Shirley Wendt was born Feb 13, 1925 in Detroit to William Fred and Meta Henrietta Rein Wendt. She received her PhD in Education from Wayne State University. She was a teacher for 8 years and an assistant principal for 23 in the Detroit Schools. Her love for children and her staff were the hallmarks of her service. Her interests were numerous. They included crafts, reading, geography and walking. She traveled around the world prior to her retirement. We remember her giggles, her love for her church, chocolate, Snoopy and Woodstock, winning at dice, and books-on-tape and CDs. Most of all she loved people. She faithfully attended Bible Study and her monthly luncheon with the teachers. She maintained many friendships over the years. The family especially thanks all those who were her guardian angels, assisting her in her desire for independence as her eyes grew dimmer. Aunt Shirley cherished her family, and they adored her. She is survived by her nieces, Diane Moskaluk, Cynthia (David) Burt, Pam (Gene) Baerwolf, Dawn (Roger) Panczner, Marcia Eubanks and Dr. Christine Phillips; her nephews William (Sharon) Hassig, M.D. and Walter M. (Jennifer Irwin, M.D.) Hassig, M.D.; 19 grand nieces and nephews; and ten great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sisters, Norma Phillips and Elaine Hassig; and brother-in-laws Walter W. Hassig, MD and Bud Phillips. A memorial service will be held Dec 27 at 11 am at First English Evangelical Lutheran Church, Grosse Pointe Woods. The family will receive visitors at 10 am. Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund (Luther Center) or to the Music Fund (Open Door Series), First English Evangelical Lutheran Church, 800 Vernier Rd, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.
