Steven Douglas Ewald, age 70, of St. Clair Shores, Michigan, passed away on August 25, 2026. He was born on February 29, 1956 to Ronald and the late Virginia Ewald of Livonia, Michigan. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 36 years, Leslie, and children Steven, Rita Cunha (Morrie), and Matthew (Cate Lee), as well as brand new granddaughter, Blair Cunha. Together they built a family filled with love, laughter and countless memories. He was a devoted father and treasured the time he spent with his family.
Steve is also survived by his father, Ronald (the late Virginia), brothers Michael (Debby), Ronald (Dolores), and Curtis (Kathy), as well as many loving nieces and nephews.
Steve spent much of his life working in the paint business. He owned and operated Harrison Paint of Grosse Pointe for more than 25 years, becoming a staple in the community and forming lasting relationships with his customers. He then spent over a dozen years at Gilbert’s Hardware managing their paint department where his knowledge and ability to find the perfect color match became something he was well known for. Steve was a wonderful role model for his children by exhibiting a tireless work ethic, in good times and bad, sacrificing his own wants for those of his family.
Steve had a big personality and an even bigger circle of people who knew and loved him. He was outgoing, talkative, and never seemed to meet a stranger. Whenever the family went somewhere, it wasn’t unusual to run into someone he knew and he always seemed to have a story or conversation waiting to be had.
He was longtime member of the Knights of Columbus, an active parishioner at Sweetest Heart of Mary, and enjoyed volunteering for various activities and being part of the Church community. Steve enjoyed the outdoors, especially fishing when he could, and cherished the memories of annual camping trips with his family. He also enjoyed spending his downtime watching old westerns.
Steve will be remembered for his love for his family, his dedication to his work and community, and the many friendships he made throughout his life. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
