Sydney A. Chase, age 93, died peacefully at Crittenton Hospital in Rochester on January 19, 2016. Sydney was born in Detroit on April 16, 1922, the daughter of August and Anna Bloom. She grew up in Detroit and was a 1940 graduate of Annunciation High School. During her school years, she played the violin and was involved in high school plays, set design and art. After graduation she worked at Detroit Edison in the payroll department. She met Henry O. Chase and the young couple was eventually married at St. Theresa Church in 1948. They began their family and soon moved to Grosse Pointe Farms where they had a home built. In 1987 she moved to Birmingham for a short time before moving to Rochester Hills in 1990. Sydney cared about people. Kind, selfless and nurturing, she brought joy to those she touched. Her six grandchildren were the lucky recipients of this abiding attention and love. Special memories abound. At Black Lake in northern Michigan, Sydney was in her element. Having lived in nearby Onaway as a child, going "up north" was going home. The family cottage provided the perfect place to celebrate just being together. Mrs. Chase was a member of St. Ireneaus Catholic Church in Rochester Hills. Sydney is survived by her four children; Sarah Benoit (Wilfred), Mary Jo Chase, Henry (Patricia) and Thomas (Sally); six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband Henry in 1983. Her body will lie instate at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack at Overlake in St. Clair Shores from 9:15 a.m. Saturday until mass begins at 10:00 a.m. Bishop Michael Byrnes will officiate. A private interment will follow at Mount Olivet Cemetery in Detroit. In lieu of flowers, the family has suggested memorials be made to The Capuchins, c/o The Province of St. Joseph of the Capuchin Order, Attn: Development Office, 1820 Mt. Elliott Street; Detroit, MI 48207.
