

Thomas James Walters, born June 10th, 1940 in Harvey, Illinois, passed away on April 20th, 2026 in Grosse Pointe, Michigan. He was the beloved husband of Barbara (Kowalski) for 63 years, and the proud Father, Father-in-Law, Grandpa and Great-Grandpa of his family that he meant everything to. He leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, commitment and unwavering character.
Tom was a man that did things his own way. He was known for his intelligence, strong work ethic, and sharp, often sarcastic sense of humor that those close to him cherished. He showed his love through a lifetime of caring for his family and supporting those around him.
Tom dedicated more than 30 years of service to the City of Detroit Planning Commission, where he remained committed to the city he believed in so strongly. Even during its most difficult times, Tom saw the good in Detroit and worked to make it better. During his retirement years in Tellico Village, Tennessee, he gave back through his involvement with Habitat for Humanity, helping others build homes and brighter futures.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara; his children: Mark (Debra) Walters, Lisa (Robert) Dumouchelle, Pamela (Peter) Sack, and Sara (Andrew) Maulbetsch; and cherished grandchildren: Gavin, Owen and Drake; Alexander (Courtney) and their son Oliver, William (fiancee Janet), Daniel, Amanda (fiancee Noah); Laila and Emory: Kayci and Tiffani. He is also survived by his sister, Maryann Blazak, along with many extended family members.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Stanley and Irene, and his brother Richard.
A memorial service is being planned, and details will be shared once arrangements are finalized. The family asks that you keep Barbara in your thoughts and prayers during this time. In lieu of flowers, a donation may be made in his name to Habitat for Humanity, Loudon, Tennessee, link below.

Tom will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. His family will carry forward his strength, values, and love, always striving to make him proud. He remains a legend in the hearts of his family. We take comfort in knowing that we will see him again.
