Vernelle "Nell" Scott Nordness, 85 of Warren, began walking the streets of gold with her Savior on August 11, 2015. Born and raised in Mt. Ida, Arkansas, her brush with fame was being on the 1948 State Women's Championship Basketball Team. Nell came to Michigan during the summers in the late 1940's and worked at Sanders and the Kresge counter. After marrying Floyd in 1949 and having their first child, they moved to Michigan where she resided for the remainder of her life. She worked at a shoe store, as a personal chauffer, in a family drugstore, and finished her working career as an assistant to Dr. Leonard Birndorf for over 20 years. Nell was active in several churches, taught the 4-year old Sunday School Class, was a Girl Scout Leader, PTA president, and always sought to serve others. She loved to cook large dinners for family and friends, was always ready to deliver a home-cooked meal to a friend in need, sit by her ailing sibling's and husband's bedside, and was a gracious hostess to traveling family. Her coworkers still speak of her as their mentor. She and Floyd loved to camp, fish, bowl, and travel throughout the country; often visiting their daughter Carol in Chicago and Atlanta and their daughter Sheila and family in Tennessee. In her later years, she and Wally traveled often and wintered in Nokomos, Florida where they always participated in the Senior Games. Just this year she was on the women's bocce team that defeated the men's team. Nell never met a stranger and could strike up a conversation with anyone which garnered her many friends. Beloved wife of the late Floyd for almost 50 years. Loving mother of Arthur, Sheila (Harold) Ellis and Carolyn (Roger) Young. Married 14 years to Walter Nordness who's family accepted her with love; John (Jill) Snitko, Christine Bates and Sandra (Jeffrey) Roy. She is also survived by grandchildren and great-grandchildren of both families and nieces and nephews who she loved dearly. Nell's family will receive friends on Friday, August 14th from 2:00pm until 8:00pm at the A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 32000 Schoenherr at Masonic (13-1/2 Mile), Warren. Instate Saturday, August 15th at 9:00am until time of service 10:00am at the funeral home. Interment will take place on Saturday, August 15th at 2:00pm at White Chapel Cemetery in Troy. Memorial contributions may be made to Beaumont Hospice.
