Born in Centerline, Michigan, he was the beloved son of Fred and Edna Flaim. Affectionately known by his family as “Corky,” Al spent his early years in Centerline where he attended local schools before going on to earn a degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Detroit.
In high school, Al was part of a close-knit group of friends known as the “Seven Boys,” which consisted of Jack, Joe, Tom, Sid, Earl, Rollie, and Al.
Al built a life centered on faith, family, and friendship. He was married to his beloved wife Nancy, and together they raised their three sons in Greenwich, Connecticut: Stephen (Sandy), David (grandson Nick), and Michael (Anita). In later years, the family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, where many cherished memories continued to be made. Al loved to go fishing with his grandson Nick, who predeceased him.
Following Nancy’s passing, Al found love again and married Sandra Frye. Through this marriage he was blessed with stepchildren Tina (Bill), Don (Tracy) and Tony (Lana), and step-grandchildren Megan, Billy, Sarah, Nikki, Don Jr, Chris and Jaimie.
He will also be missed by many dear friends, especially those from his Golf League.
Al was preceded in death by his siblings Fred and Annie and is survived by his sister Carol.
Al was a man of deep faith and a proud member of the Knights of Columbus. He enjoyed many simple pleasures that brought people together. Al loved golfing and was a member of the Upper Arlington Senior Men’s Golf League. He also enjoyed playing corn hole in the Grove City Cornhole League with Megan, watching football, and attending NHL Columbus Blue Jackets games.
Time spent entertaining family and friends in his yard, spending time with his beloved dog Becky, and sitting down for a good game of cards with many friends in his Euchre club were among his favorite pastimes. Something that most people do not know about Al, is that he was very creative and enjoyed carving life sized, Christian statues, from large tree trunks in his yard. He created a Crucifix, St. Rita and St. Peregrine.
Al will be remembered by his family and friends for his unwavering devotion to his loved ones, his welcoming spirit, and the faith that guided his life. His warmth, kindness, and quiet strength left a lasting impression on all who knew him.
