He was born on September 17, 1932 in Grove City, Ohio.
Don proudly served his country during the Korean War as a member of the United States Army. After returning home, he enjoyed a long career with Reynolds Metals before retiring. He also served his community as one of the original volunteer firefighters for Pleasant Township.
On October 4, 1968, Don married the love of his life, Ruth Krieger, at St. John's Lutheran Church. Together they shared 57 years of marriage built on faith, family, and a love of spending time together.
A devoted member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church for many years, Don was an active participant in the church's men's group. Whether helping maintain the church building or opening his woodworking shop for projects that supported the congregation, he was always willing to lend his time, talents, and steady hands in service to others.
Don found joy in woodworking, gathering around the card table with friends, and, after retirement, traveling throughout the United States and Canada. Many of those adventures were shared with his dear friends, Harry and Barb Bradley. Don and Harry often referred to one another as brothers, a reflection of a lifelong friendship built on trust, laughter, and countless miles traveled together.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Erma McQuay; daughter Diane Ellcessor; his stepsons, Gary and Don Osborn; and his siblings, Lillian, Dorothy, Robert, and Mary.
He is survived by his beloved wife of 57 years, Ruth McQuay; his children, Richard (Brandy) McQuay, David McQuay, Debbie (Craig) Scholtz, and Donald McQuay; sister, Gladys Hill; along with many cherished grandchildren, great-grandchildren, extended family members, and dear friends.
Don will be remembered for his quiet generosity, his willingness to help wherever he was needed, his devotion to his family, and the friendships he cultivated throughout his life. His legacy lives on in the people he served, the things he built, and the many lives he touched.
