Howard W. Linder

Howard W. Linder, age 89, passed away on September 3, 2026. Born October 31, 1936, Howard lived a life marked by steady devotion, quiet courage, and a deep, abiding faith that guided him in both ordinary days and defining moments. A resident of Grove City, Ohio, he was widely cherished—by family, friends, and coworkers alike—for the dependable strength he brought to those around him and for the generosity that seemed to come naturally to him.

Howard was a graduate of OSU, earning a bachelor’s degree, and he carried that Buckeye pride throughout his life. He also served in the United States Army from 1956 to 1958, a chapter he remembered with respect and reflection—especially in later years when he returned to Europe to see his Army barracks again, a meaningful journey that spoke to his sense of history, gratitude, and brave steadiness.

A hard-working man through and through, Howard built a long career that included work with OG Sambo Company and Swift and Company, and he retired from Empire Foods with over 20 years of service. Those who knew him best recognized not only his work ethic, but the integrity behind it—an approach rooted in responsibility, reliability, and care for others.

Howard was married for 65 years to Donna C. Linder, a bond that reflected enduring love and devotion. He was preceded in death by his parents, Walter P. and Carrie W. (Horning) Linder, and his sister, Rhea (John) Coll. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Donna; sons, David (Michelle) Linder and Stephen (Denise) Linder; grandchildren, Steven Linder, Nicole (Logan) Flowers, and Ryan Linder; step grandchildren, Matt (Katie) Rigelsky and Jared Yee; great granddaughters, Aubrie, Tesla, Alyson, and Sofia; and his special niece, Ann Harper, along with many dear friends and coworkers.

A lifelong Buckeye fan, Howard’s enthusiasm was as faithful as it was joyful—whether cheering on OSU, tailgating first in a big tent and later from the back of their van, or participating in the Buckeye Cruise for Cancer for many years. At home, he found satisfaction in working in his vegetable garden, and he treasured Sunday dinners and cookouts with family—simple gatherings made richer by his presence. He also enjoyed a nice glass of red wine and traveling throughout the United States and Europe, embracing the world with an adventurous spirit that never left him. Long before adulthood, he even acted in plays in high school, a reminder of the many sides of a life well lived.

Howard was a member of St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Grove City for over 40 years. He served as an usher for 40 years—a role he took very seriously—and he was also one of the original leaders of OWLS (Older Wiser Lutheran Seniors). His faith was not merely spoken; it was practiced in service, in consistency, and in the quiet ways he showed up for others. He was also a member of the Buckeye Alumni Group, reflecting the lasting pride he held in his OSU roots.

Those closest to Howard often spoke of his “heart of gold.” He was giving, and he genuinely enjoyed helping—offering his time, his steadiness, and his care without fanfare. In the life he built and the love he gave, Howard leaves a legacy of devotion, generosity, and faithful strength that will be remembered with gratitude and respect.

Visitation will be held at Schoedinger Norris Grove City, 4242 Hoover Road, Grove City, OH 43123, on September 9, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 6:00 pm.

A Funeral Service will be held at St John's Evangelical Lutheran Church, 3220 Columbus St, Grove City, OH 43123, on September 10, 2026, from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm.
