Born on November 27, 1932, in Lawrence County, Kentucky, J.C. lived a long and fulfilling life marked by hard work, laughter, and a deep love for his family and friends. As a talented finish carpenter, he worked in most of the high-rise office buildings and several hospitals in the Columbus area and spent more than 50 years perfecting his craft as a proud member of Carpenters Local Union 200. His love for working with his hands extended well beyond his career, as he could often be found working on houses, tending to his garden, or finding another project to keep himself busy.
Known to many as "J.C.,” "Kelly," or his favorite title, “Papaw,” he truly never knew a stranger. With a quick wit, a mischievous sense of humor, and a knack for making people laugh, J.C. delighted in pulling pranks on his friends and sharing a good joke whenever the opportunity arose. He was famously stubborn and would proudly admit, a little "bull-headed." Yet beneath that stubborn streak was a man whose warmth, humor, and larger-than-life personality made him unforgettable to those who knew him.
J.C. was also a natural storyteller, always ready with a tale from his childhood in Kentucky, memories of life on the farm, or stories about the family he held so dear. Through his stories, he kept cherished memories alive, passing along laughter, wisdom, and a little bit of mischief to the generations who followed.
Above all, J.C. was a devoted husband and family man. He shared nearly 67 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Geneva. Together, they built a life filled with love, family, and countless memories. His greatest legacy lies not only in the things he built with his hands, but also in the love and memories he leaves with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife, Geneva; son, Ronnie (Helen) Kelly; daughter, Pamela Kelly; granddaughters, Stephanie (Anthony) Marchesi and Rachel (Bryan) Tibbs; and great-grandsons, Ariste and Gene Marchesi. He is also survived by his brother, Lloyd Kelly; his special brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Emmett and Louise Brammer; many beloved nieces and nephews; and a wonderful circle of supportive friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Emory and Alma Kelly; his sisters, Ruby, Juanita, Wanda Lee, and Paula Jean; his brother, Bobby; and cherished mother-in-law, Mona.
J.C. leaves behind a lifetime of stories, laughter, and memories that will continue to be shared by those who loved him. His hardworking hands built more than houses; they helped build a life and a family whose love will endure for generations. While his presence will be deeply missed, his humor, his determination, and his unmistakable spirit will never be forgotten.
And perhaps the best way to honor J.C. is to share a good story, make someone laugh, and enjoy a bowl of chocolate ice cream in his memory.
Family and friends are invited to celebrate J.C.’s life on Wednesday, October 21st from 5 PM to 8 PM at Schoedinger Norris Grove City, located at 4242 Hoover Road, Grove City, Ohio, 43123.
A funeral service honoring J.C.’s life will be held on Thursday, October 22nd at 1 PM at Schoedinger Norris Grove City, with Preacher Robert Martindale officiating.
Following the service, J.C. will be laid to rest at Concord Cemetery in Grove City, Ohio.
