John Edward Quaintance passed peacefully at his home in Columbus, Ohio with his little dog Angel by his side. He had just turned 94 on November 10th. Preceding him in death were his parents, siblings, and his son Mike. In April 2021, he lost his beloved wife of 42 years, Dolores. He is survived by his daughters Vicki Quaintance and Suzi Quaintance Reeve (Chris), his step children Renee Chaffin and Darrin Wolfe (Missy), grandchildren Michael Shea, Alex Shea (Alex McClincy), Zachary Northouse (Heather), Emily Northouse, Amber Schneider ( Dustin) , Adam Chaffin, Dustin Wolfe, Hunter Wolfe. He had 3 great grandchildren Kaydence Schneider, Landon Northouse, and Rilynn Northouse.
John was 1 of 5 siblings born to parents Ivan Quaintance, and Marie Windnagel, who immigrated from Germany as a young girl. He played football at South High School in Columbus, and still socialized with his South High School classmates. At age 18, he bought and customized a Ford Model T, traveling to Treasure Island, Florida with his cousin. He studied electronics at Bliss Community College, and worked as Butcher at Kroger’s. In 1950, he joined the Army, and was sent to the Korean War. He was a mechanic close to the front line, and subsequently wounded and sent home 3 months early.
He joined Shaffer Distributing, working 47 years with the company before retiring at age 72. He enjoyed working in the field, repairing pinball and vending machines and installing Music systems.
He met his first wife Carol at Jimmy Rawlins Dance Studio , with whom he shared 3 children. They enjoyed playing pinochle, entertaining, dancing and taking vacations to Lake Erie. He liked to bowl, ski, and sail with his son Mike. He met his 2nd wife Dolores at Fred Astaire Dance Studio, and they married in 1979. Together they raised her young son Darrin and her older daughter Renee. They had very active social lives, attending OSU football games, going on Cruises, and enjoyed going dancing every Friday night. They had memberships at Germania Club, Swiss Club, Mannerchoir. He enjoyed taking his boat out fishing to the Delaware reservoir and Lake Erie, and spending time with his hunting club buddies.
He was passionate about the game of golf, especially in his later years. At 93 years old, he still played 9 holes a weekly with the same group of guys at Wilson Rd Golf Course. Johnny was a colorful character, sharing stories with anyone and everyone. He never knew a stranger. He loved life, and lived his with a positive outlook, core integrity and fierce loyalty to his family, friends and employer. He will be missed by many, loved by all. And he sure did love his coffee…..
