Matthew Francis Selan

Affectionately known as “Speedy” by his friends and family, Matthew was a graduate of Mt. Lebanon High School in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and later attended electronics school after his discharge from the army. His career, like his family life, was marked by steady dedication and a quiet sense of purpose.

Matthew built a long career in the electronics and technology field, working for companies including EMC, Motorola, and Sun Microsystems, from which he retired. He was remembered there as a calm presence with a thoughtful, practical approach to both work and life.

Matthew was preceded in death by his wife of 43 years, Christine Selan; his parents, Matthew and Violet (Hayman) Selan; and his brothers-in-law, Neal Holmes and William White. He is survived by his children, Jodi (Richard Coverdale) Yeager, Molly A. (Michi Relvas) Selan, Christine “Chrissy” (Karl) Swenson, Bethany Selan, and Matt (Molly M.) Selan; his grandchildren, Maria Yeager, Anna Yeager, Rose Swenson, Matthew Selan, Violet Swenson, Michael Selan, and Madolyn Selan; his great-grandson, Beredan Yeager; his sisters, June Holmes and Patricia “Teekey” White; and several nieces, nephews, and friends.

Those who knew Matthew will remember a gentle, kind-hearted man whose generosity showed itself in steady, unassuming ways. He carried an easygoing calm that put others at ease, and a quiet wisdom that spoke through patience, perspective, and plain good sense. He also had a warm sense of humor — able to find something to smile about in almost any situation — bringing lightness without ever losing his dignity.

Matthew’s hands were rarely still. An avid gun collector, he also restored firearms with great care and precision. A woodworker and tinkerer, he was known as someone who could fix anything. A natural craftsman, Matthew poured his time and talent into renovating and expanding the family home in Mansfield to create room for his growing family. Having worked on a farm as a young man, he carried a lasting appreciation for the land, finding satisfaction in growing vegetables and in the quiet rewards of things made and tended over time.

A visitation will be held on Monday, September 14, 2026, from 5-7 pm at Schoedinger Grove City 4242 Hoover Rd where his funeral service will be held on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, at 10:30 am. Interment will take place at St. Joseph Cemetery Lockbourne, Ohio.
