Sharon Anne Bermel, age 90, peacefully went home to be with the Lord on Friday, January 23, 2026. She was born on May 6, 1935, in Ashland, OH, to Walter and Ruth Kerr. She received her undergraduate degree from Wittenberg College and her master’s degree from The Ohio State University. She worked for 31 years as a teacher and reading coordinator, retiring as a Supervisor of Evaluation Services in Columbus Public Schools. After the passing of her beloved husband, Blaine, she moved from her family home in Pickerington, OH, to Fort Myers, FL, in 1988 to be near her mother. She was a resident of Shell Point Retirement Community for the last 20+ years.
Sharon enjoyed golf, tennis, swimming, traveling, ballroom dancing, and completing the daily crossword. She loved The Ohio State Buckeyes and sang their fight song any time they were brought up. In fact, she could turn just about any conversation into a song.
Above all, she loved the Lord and her family. Her daughter, Ellie, cherishes the many times of singing harmony with her mom, eating Love Boat Ice Cream, and walking on Fort Myers Beach together. Her grandkids and great-grandkids hold many special memories of doing all they could to make her laugh, going out to dinner as a family, and playing Crazy 8s. Her love for her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, was captivating. She loved to sing the great hymns of the faith and would frequently quote Scripture, her favorites being “Amazing Grace” and Proverbs 3:5–8. She was a long-time member of Westminster Presbyterian Church (Fort Myers, FL), and later The Village Church at Shell Point, where she sang in the choir and enjoyed playing in the handbell ensemble. She generously gave to global missions to spread the name of Christ among the nations.
We deeply appreciate the wonderful staff at Shell Point Village for the love and care that they gave to her and for expressing how joyful and gracious a person she truly was.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Blaine Bermel; her parents, Walter and Ruth Kerr; her sister, Judy Glaser; brother-in-law, Neil Glaser, and her brother, George Kerr.
She is survived by her daughter, Elinor (David) Thomas; children by marriage, Leslie Bermel, Blaine L. (Millie) Bermel Jr., and Laura (Paco) Rodriguez; grandchildren, Christina (Christopher) Riggs, Jonathan (Shayne) Thomas, Stephanie (Nikolaus) Haney, and Erik (Elizabeth) Bermel; and great-grandchildren, Harrison, Leo, Martyn, and Elowyn Riggs; Clara and Julia Thomas; and Ailani Bermel; and a number of nieces and nephews. She was also blessed to have her best friend, Ann Wharton of Shell Point Village, continue to be an encouragement until the end.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 3, 2026 at Schoedinger Grove City 4242 Hoover Rd. Grove City, OH at 10:30 am with family receiving friends from 9:30 am until time of service at 10:30 am. Pastor David Thomas, Pastor Jonathan Thomas and Harrison Riggs, officiating.
In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the missions fund at The Village Church at Shell Point. https://share.google/UVns8Y8imtlXeZ8vW
