

Survived and mourned by her son John Mark, daughter-in-law Yenisey Hernandez Infante, beloved grand daughter, Agnes Aurora Sherlock Hernandez and her sister Rita Stilo (Frank) and sister-in-law Shirley as well as many nieces, nephews and friends.
She is predeceased by her husband, James Vincent Sherlock, her brothers and sisters, Chester (Shirley), Dr. Romulus (Madeleine), William Carere, Cosimo Carere, Mary Tessaro, Fortunata Carere, Jack Carere, and Frank Carere, her mother and father, her sister-in-law and brothers-in-law Mary Dool (William), Reverend Bill Sherlock, Gerald Sherlock (Bernice), Most Reverend John Michael Sherlock (retired Bishop of London), Edward Monahan (Eleanor) and Reverend Philip Sherlock.
Also left to mourn are her sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Eleanor Monahan (Edward) and Allan (Annamarie), and many friends and neighbours.
Born November 10, 1927 in Guelph, the daughter of Catarina Maria Vincenza Giovinazzo and Giacomo Domenico Antonio Carere, Catherine attended Sacred Heart Elementary School and Loretto Academy.
She received her Teachers Certificate from Stratford Normal School and went on to earn her Bachelor of Arts degree with studies in Physical Education and History from the University of Western Ontario in 1954.
Catherine was beloved by her students as a teacher at Sacred Heart School and as a teacher and particularly as a basketball coach at Notre Dame High School, Guelph (1956-66) and Cathedral Girls High School, Hamilton (1966-70) where she was the Head of the Physical Education Department. Her teams went on to win numerous championships. She was affectionately and respectfully known as “The Coach” to many of her family. Catherine retired from her teaching career in the position of teacher/librarian at St. John’s Elementary School in Oakville.
She was married at the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate, Guelph, June 25, 1966 and was a long-standing parishioner of St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church, Burlington.
Catherine was well known amongst her friends and family as an enthusiast and player of many sports over the years, especially of tennis. She also had diverse interests ranging from cooking and books to opera and birdwatching. She was a member of the University Women’s Club, participating in the book club. She spent time at the Burlington Cultural Centre (Now the Art Gallery of Burlington) in the Art Rental Department.
The family also wishes to express their appreciation to Catherine's family doctor, Dr. Leslie Hanson, the PSWs and nurses who cared for her at home as well as the doctors and nurses and support workers at Joseph Brant Memorial Hospital.
Visitation at Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home (252 Dublin St. N. Guelph), on Thursday, July 3, 2025 from 2-4 & 7-9 pm. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated at the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate (28 Norfolk St. Guelph) on Friday, July 4, 2025, at 10:30 am, followed by Committal to take place at Marymount Cemetery (5400 Hwy 6, Guelph). A reception will follow the Committal at the hall of the Basilica of Our Lady Immaculate (28 Norfolk St. Guelph).
